[edit] What Makes A Good Overall Map?
Beyond What makes a good Tactical Gamer map, you still have to consider some general map making criteria.
[edit] General
- Varying Map Size
- 64/32/16
A great map will provide a map for all sizes. - Placement of CPs
When changing the size of a map, the proper placement of CPs is key. They shouldn't be too far apart and still offer the variety of CPs that the larger maps contain.
- 64/32/16
- Map / Minimap
Creating / generating the map & minimap to display the proper overgrowth, buildings, color, etc. - Opening / Menu background
Make sure this image fits with the map and doesn't affect the visibility of the menu. - Overview
Provide the history or scenario for the map to add context. Try to incorporate some of that background in your map.
[edit] Look & Feel
- Object placement / angles
Extra time should be taken to place objects. Objects should not be floating, sitting at wrong angles, etc. Objects should make sense where they are placed also. Jeeps probably shouldn't start sitting in water. - Over/Undergrowth
Having a balance of trees, grass, shrubs, etc. can greatly affect the appeal of a map. The right mix of vegetation is also important. Would someone see only two types of trees in a region? - Painting
Adding tire tracks, burn marks, etc. also adds to the appeal of a map.
