I played a few hours last nite with some friends and did the anti-air role using heavy AA. Since I'm pretty new to this I grouped 4 heavy AA together and had them attempt to follow my buddies tanks around while I tried to down or chase off choppers. With the group selected I targeted a chopper one by one, moving to the next after the first was downed. I noticed a bunch of missiles being shot at each chopper and they did their thing. But, it takes too much time and the chopper group usually just targeted my AAs and took them out.

I tried shifting to selected each AA unit separately and then targeting different choppers. Seemed better overall, but they still pounded me since single missiles were hitting single choppers. And, much mouse clicking to get this to work in the heat of battle.

How are you guys managing AA attacks for effectiveness?

I like to mix medium AA with heavy, since they both have their own strengths. Flares don't slow down the medium at all, but smoke does. The heavy has smoke, but it can't take out a group of inf close by.

to start, i spawn 3 heavy and 1 repair. then i spawn 2 more heavy as the points become available. i follow around the tanks like any aa should be and i repair them, usually get a ton of points and TA for t his. as for choppers, yes u do get targeted, but i usually let the aa handle the choppers by themselves. if u target on 1 chopper at a time, this wont scare em off, but if u launch at em all randomly, then they usually fly off.

ALWAYS pop smoke if choppers are barreling down to you. Most of the time you can still see the choppers a shoot at them while the choppers have terrible LOS and either sit there and take it or have to run away.

I second all of the above. I never target individual helos which makes the heavy AA even easier to use since you don't have an offense ability to worry about either.

I never use mediums although I may try mixing in one or two as the helo players get better at using the flares.

I usually get 2 heavy AA and 2 repair tanks. Then as more points come in I get some medium AA (however many I can afford). Then after a while, I airdrop in some light tanks for a bit of protection. With regards to how to use them, I target the heavy choppers first and then just let them fire at will at anything left.

Now with a couple more hours of working with the Heavy AA using the approach of grouping 4 or 5 together, moving them around the battlefield protecting my tank group buddies, popping smoke and letting the AI do the helo selection and shooting I see it to be a much more effective method. My scores have increased, but much more important is the dirty big grin on my face as my AA group just splatters groups of 4 or 5 unsuspecting helos.

They catch fire, spin out of control, come apart and basically crash and burn.

And, funnier is when an AA missile is fired and all the helos are downed - it goes round and round in circles searching justice.

I was playing with heavy AA once and all the enemy heli's except one were killed, the other one flew into the 'fog of war'. The AA missile was flying round and round in circles looking for something to shoot, when all of a sudden this heli comes back into view and gets blasted by the missile!

Gotta love it when that happens!
