How Do you Start???

Ok... When I play INF..I like to start ASAP with 3 AT Soldiers and 3 Troop Carriers... (I hold out the extra 5 secs or so to get enough points to do this) .. But if you got a bunch of Helo Jockeys on the other side then it goes to 3 Inf units...

Armor: If it's a Speed thing I go for 5 Troop Carriers... Good for Helo and Inf attacks.. and cheap.. Otherwise it's a Mix of 2 Med Tanks and 2 Medium AA and maybe a Repair Truck...

Support:

1 Heavy Arty and 2 Heavy AA units...

Re: How Do you Start???

Infantry I generally get mostly standard squads, a few AT and one or 2 snipers. The rest goes to trucks.
Armour. Depends really. Generally 2 heavy + 2 medium. I airdrop in jeeps for AA and repairs. Or sometimes I go for amphibious or if NATO, all APCs as the warriors are easily the best against armour and air.
Support. I don't really play support much but usually 3 medium AA, 1 or 2 heavy AA, 2 repair tanks. Or an AA/arty combo.
Air. 2 heavy, the rest light choppers. Again, airdrop jeeps for repairs, just keep them well hidden.

Re: How Do you Start???

Inf: Usually 1 or 2 heavy, 1 inf, 1 sniper and the rest for trucks or one BH
Armor: Almost always 2 heavy and 2 medium, I'll airdrop a humvee when I can and airdrop some light tanks up on a ridge overlooking where I'm defending
Support: Usually 1 Heavy arty and 2 heavy aa to start out, then I'll buy a 3rd heavy aa and finally a repair tank
Air: I usually don't play as air, but when I have some good aa allies I'll make just heavy's, and run to them for air support if needed

The repair tank is very useful, I'd recommend using it especially in singleplayer. The combat repair feature is good, as it repairs a large chunk, normally 2/3 of the vehicles health instantly. Don't use the self repairs unless you're not under fire, if the unit is fired at while using this, it stops the self repairs to the tank.

One thing I don't get though, if you zoom in on the US repair tank, you can see what looks like a 30.cal machinegun on the roof, facing backwwards. Why doesn't it use this?

All the tanks have machine guns on them too, yet they never use them either

It's undoubtedly part of the rock-paper-scissors game design.

I'm still very much in the experimentation stage so I don't have any good start up suggestions. I know VegaBond has played the game a fair bit and he raises the valid point about specializing your outfits if possible. If you are doing support then go full AA or full arty (for example). I'm not completely sold on that but I do try to follow that philosophy if I think I can get away it.

Re: How Do you Start???

It depends entirely upon what the team needs, what the map needs, and what kind of enemies I'm facing.

SPOILER ALERT! [klaxon]

In the cutscene where Bannon in the tank kills a load of Russian civvies, the video is from the viewpoint inside the tank. He says 'infantry dead ahead, switch to COAX' Coax I presume stands for coaxial machine gun. He then mows down the civvies. If bannon can use a machinegun then why can't we? They could even make it a very weak one that fires very short bursts.

I'm not so sure about going all for one thing. I keep my aa in groups of 3, since it takes 3 missiles to kill a helo and they usually fire at the same target, so having a group of 4 or 5 seems pretty worthless to me, and 1 artillery piece is usually more than enough to kill whatever it's shooting at, sure two is better but then you can't roam around with aa's or repair tanks. If there's someone going all arty then I'll go all aa and visa versa of course, but most of the time on a public server I prefer not to rely on random people

Hmm....that's a good point about the AA although that would imply that all 3 of your guys are shooting at the same time. More likely they have staggered fire as the target comes into their range. Thus having more than 3 units might work ok since the target might die by the time they are due to fire (next).

Yeah thats definately true, and if I'm not using my 3 heavy aa, 1 heavy arty, and 1 repair tank setup I'll usually have more than 3 aa
