I remember hearing all of this stuff about Onyxia, how she drops a handful of epics and a ton of other stuff, but never really knew what the steps were to get to her. You will need Onyxia’s Key (the Drakefire Amulet) in order to get to her. So, here is a guide that we all can follow as we level, to make sure that when the time comes, we are all prepared to get 'er done.

There are 15 steps to this chain, the first of which can be acquired at level 48. This is a LONG chain, guys- this is why I wanted all of us to have a clear outline on the steps we need to take. I've included links to Thottbot for each respective quest, to help you, including a link to the map for anyone you need to speak with.

Please keep me posted on your progress towards obtaining the key, so that people who need to do certain steps can try to group together to accomplish each quest. If you discover any interesting notes while working on this, please reply with that info so that the people who haven't gotten there yet know what they're in for!

**Please note: as this took me forever to put together, I am certain that I have made some mistakes along the way. Let me know what I need to correct and I will keep this thread updated accordingly.

Quest Title, Location, Quest-giver (with map, if available)
Step 1: Dragonkin Menace Burning Steppes, Helendis Riverhorn
Quest Info: Slay 15 Black Broodlings, 10 Black Dragonspawn, 4 Black Wyrmkin and 1 Black Drake. Return to Helendis Riverhorn when the task is complete.

Step 2: The True Masters (Part 1, Redridge) Burning Steppes, Helendis Riverhorn
Quest Info: Travel to Lakeshire and deliver Helendis Riverhorn's Letter to Magistrate Solomon.

Step 3: The True Masters (Part 2, Stormwind) Lakshire, Magistrate Solomon
Quest Info: Travel to Stormwind and deliver Solomon's Plea to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon. Bolvar resides in Stormwind Keep.

Step 4: The True Masters (Part 3, Redridge) Stormwind, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon
Quest Info: Take Bolvar's Decree to Magistrate Solomon in Lakeshire.

Step 5: The True Masters (Part 4, Morgan’s Vigil) Lakeshire, Magistrate Solomon
Quest Info: Speak with Marshal Maxwell in the Burning Steppes.

Step 6: Talk to Ragged John Burning Steppes (Flame Crest), Ragged John
Quest Info: Speak to Ragged John in Flame Crest. (He tells you a long story which includes some info on Marshal Windsor, and you go about your merry way.)

Step 7: Marshal Windsor Burning Steppes (Morgan’s Vigil), Marshal Maxwell
Quest Info: Locate Marshal Windsor in Blackrock Depths.
Notes: Talk to Marshal Maxwell, who gives you this quest. Here’s where the plot thickens. You will need to travel to BRD with a 5-man group and speak with Marshal Windsor. When entering the instance, if you go forward, there is a big round room with lots of patrols. The 1st path to your right will lead to Windsor who is locked up within the prison block. On your way, you will need to get the key to Windsor’s prison cell by killing High Interrogator Gerstahn. Hang onto that key, for future quests on this chain.

Step 8: Abandoned Hope Abandoned Hope Blackrock Depths, Marshal Windsor
Quest Info: Return to Marshal Maxwell in Morgan’s Vigil to report about Marshal Windsor.
Notes: There is no follow-up quest here. See next step.

Step 9: A Crumpled Up Note Drops from Anvilrage Overseer (Burning Steppes), Doomforge Arcanasmith (BRD), Hammered Patron (BRD), Quarry Slave (BR Mountain)
Quest Info: Bring the crumpled note back to Marshal Windsor in BRD.
Notes: This note is acquired from a drop inside of Blackrock Depths, outside in Blackrock Mountain, or out in the Burning Steppes. Once you have the note, go back to Marshal Windsor and show it to him.

Step 10: A Shred of Hope Blackrock Depths, Marshal Windsor
Quest Info: Return Windsor’s lost information to him. His lost information is held by General Angerforge, and the Golem Lord Argelmach.
Notes: You will need to kill both Angerforge and Argelmacha, and return that information to Windsor. To get to these bosses, you will need to use your Shadowforge Key (obtained on a different quest) to unlock the gates to your left when entering the instance, and just inside that gate, the next gate to your right. Finally, use the key to unlock the solid door to your left. The room you will enter will have a huge crank on the lower floor that will unlock a path for you upstairs. Go up the first set of stairs, and to the left. If you end up overlooking the arena with all of the patrons, you went too far. Follow that path until you come to the end of a corridor that banks left. There will be steps going down towards the left and right. Towards the left is General Angerforge. The right leads to Argelmach.
Some intel on the bosses: Angerforge has only a handful of non-elites guarding him, but don’t be deceived. Once his health starts to drop down low, a slew of reinforcements will rush down the steps to heal him and incidentally, kill you. Make sure you bring a mage for crowd control and AOE, and a damn good healer to keep you alive. The Golem Lord Argelmach is down the stairs going right, opposite from the General. There are a million gnomes in the room that you will need to kill before you proceed to the Golem Lord. Argelmach is in a side room, with 2 elite Golems flanking him. Be sure to focus fire on the Golems and eliminate them before you focus on Argelmach.

Step 11: Jail Break Blackrock Depths, Marshal Windsor
Quest Info: Escort Marshal Windsor to safety.
Notes: You will need to clear out the two loops that connect to the big circular room (not the arena- the room with all of the roaming patrols that you enter when going east from the entrance of the instance) and the circular room itself prior to speaking with Windsor and starting the escort. Do not forget to open the supply room door and clear that out, as well as any other potential mobs that would get in your way. It’s worth investing the time to clear everything FIRST, or else your risk of having Windsor die becomes very high. First, Windsor will head back the way you came to the supply room, to get himself some armor. Guards will be in the room again, but not as many as if you didn’t clear the room in the first place. Then, he will head towards the circular room and directly across to the other loop, to try and locate and rescue another prisoner. On the way, you will need to fight various folks who show up to try and kill you, including some of the prisoners. Finally, he will head to the instance entrance, at which point the quest is complete. Make sure you have crowd control, and a healer to accomplish this- better safe than sorry.

Step 12: Stormwind Rendezvous Burning Steppes, Marshal Maxwell
Quest Info: Talk to Maxwell in Burning Steppes. He will send you to meet up with Windsor at the gates of Stormwind.

Step 13: The Great Masquerade Stormwind, Marshal Windsor
Quest info: Follow Windsor to the Keep and confront Lady Katrina Prestor and her thugs.
Notes: You apparently can solo this, although I would like to do this with a raid group to be safe. Windsor leads you to the Keep, where Lady Katrina Prestor turns into a Wyrmkin and attacks him and his buddy, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon. 10 or so lvl 60 Elite Onyxia Guards will spawn to defend her. Bolvar is a badass who can apparently kill most of the guards without any help. You can step in and assist, but don’t go getting yourself killed. Be sure to stand back initially, so that Bolvar gets the agro from the guards, not you. Speak to Fordragon afterwards to complete the quest and obtain the next step.

Step 14: The Dragon’s Eye Stormwind, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon
Quest Info: You must retrieve the Fragment of the Dragon’s Eye, in Mazthoril, Winterspring.
Notes: You will need to go to Mazthoril in Winterspring and fight your way through a load of Dragonkin within the cave. At the back of the cave is a rune on the ground that you will need to walk on. This will transport you to Haleh, who you need to speak to to complete the quest.

Step 15: Drakefire Amulet Winterspring, Haleh
Quest Info: You must retrieve the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion from General Drakkisath. Drakkisath can be found in his throne room behind the Halls of Ascension in Blackrock Spire. Bring the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion back to Haleh, in Winterspring.
I'm posting to bump this thread back to page 1. We've got some up-and-comers who are ready for this chain...or nearly so. Alava and I got Manetheren started on this last night, and there are others. As you get ready for BRD, there will be party opportunities galore!

So, Luna, do you want to sticky your original post in the strategy/tactics part of the forum?

Re: Getting Ready for Onyxia

Hey everyone...this is Zena. I ran UBRS with several of you last night. Like your group quite a bit, and was very impressed over all. (could have gone faster, but that will come with time) I just wanted to add a bit here to Tealeaf's tip here.

TL.
Her Deep Breaths have nothing to do with how much DPS you put on her in Phase II. The DPS only has to do with getting her back on the ground asap to start Phase III. Her Deep Breaths have to do with the entire raid parties position. You pretty much want to stay scattered and do NOT clup up. If you have a group that is clumpped, they will get a Deep Breath.

Just wanted to claify that aspect of her fight.

Also, those warriors that have managed to get the Book from Dire Maul that gives you teh Quel'Serrar as the quest reward...you want to plant your sword at about 15% or so. All you have to do is run up to the MT and plant it beside him...she breathes on it...your raid finishes killing her...you stab her with it...turn in the Dire Maul...hello Epic 1h Sword.

Good luck to you all and I look forward to more runs and raids with you guys!!!

Re: Getting Ready for Onyxia

Is there a tentative plan for when we might be doing this? Has it already been done? I am only 44, but I would sure love a shot at the big O. By the time we can do an all TG run I might just be 60.

In order to start the quest chain, you have to be level 48, though most don't complete it until mid-50's or later. Typically we will party and help each person doing this to get through the steps, usually spread over the course of several days or weeks. All of the quest steps in BRD require a 5 man party max, so guild help is pretty normal.

Re: Getting Ready for Onyxia

Plans to give Onyxia a whirl are in the works. I'd expect us to take our first stab at her sometime in January.

Re: Getting Ready for Onyxia

There's a way to fail that quest?
I suppose I'd just abandon it and find someone who spawns Winsor outside SW to get it back.
Otherwise you might want to abandon and try the Burning Steppes again.

I just looked at this thread, and now realize, I'm already on step 10!

Heh, I'll do my best to get this done by the time we get working on MC this week...

Ok, I'm up to part 3. There is one detail missing on that point: you are directed to talk to the Lady, then go back to Fordragon, but if you are below a certain level, you cannot move forward on the chain.

I just got my key, and really you're better off not worrying about this chain until you're 60(ish) anyway, as in order to complete it you'll need to hit both BRD, and then UBRS for Drakk.

Just wandering over from the Steppes to Lakeshire to SW netted 4000xp. That's nothing to sneeze at when levelling.

Re: Getting Ready for Onyxia

Yes, the running around easy EXP is GREAT when you're lvling and BRD isn't too terrible. It's just getting together a group for UBRS and being sure that you're going to get the blood that is a major PITA.
