Re: IL2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey
Hey Guys the demo for IL2-Sturmovik Birds of Prey is up between 5:30am ad 6:00am on XBL this morning (WEN). Enjoy, it is a single player demo and it features all three mode, ARCADE, REALISTIC, FULL SIMULATION. The demo also has Flight stick support for the Ace Edge Hotas which was sold in a Ace Combat 6 package and support for the Saitek Aviator. I hope you all take the time to check it out.

Got some quick time on it this morning before work. I'll check it out more later tonight. So far seems fun.

Re: IL2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey
Yea, gave it a good run through. No MP available in the demo.
Arcade setting is well arcadey and incredibly easy to shoot down aircraft. They go down with one or two shots. TOO EASY.
Next mission, I bumped it up to Simulation setting. Wow. Very realistic, unfortunately you can't move your head. Atleast I didn't find a way to. So while realistic, you have NO situational awareness.
So, then I bumped it down to Realistic setting. BINGO! You can still change views (I like in cockpit and the one with just the HUD). You can look around by locking on targets and even see behind you with a button. The flying is quite difficult with stalls just waiting to catch you. The enemies take more ammo to take down and no lead indicator. Perfecto!
I kept tip stalling when I'd try to yank on the joystick in panic situations inducing some recoverable and some not recoverable spins. Altitude is your friend.
The graphics are fantastic. Seeing fires burning, explosions happen, oil splattering, bombs being dropped all are fantastic. Seeing the artillery and ships firing is nice as well. All in all, very very nice.
I will definitely be getting this game. Great, great fun for all. Can't wait to try MP here at TG.

Re: IL2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey
Hmmm, What stick are you using ? I have the Ace Edge Hotas and I can look all around in the cockpit. Its actually very smooth and I was very surprised how well it works. This was one of my main worries because I know how important situational awareness.
This Demo has way impressed me ! I didn't think that a hard core sim could be done on console very well and I now stand corrected ! These guys did some top notch work.

Re: IL2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey
It was fun, though the controls really pissed me off. As JB said, moving your head is key in a super-realistic setting for situational awareness. But, everytime I move my head I end up either reducing my power level or turning my rudder. Not to mention, the movement is very fast and not fluid enough to actually be able to see what's going around you. Also, I felt that I stalled out waaay to easily on simulation mode...
So yeah, realistic mode is the most enjoyable game-mode and makes for fun gameplay.Googol

Re: IL2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey
I'm spoiled with the Ace edge hotas. It has a analog stick right on the top for looking around and it works really smooth. I can see how its a problem on the 360 controller.
The flight dynamics and the flight models are the same as Sturmovik pc when using the flight stick in sim or realistic mode. I really do miss the redouts and blackouts though. The publisher made them take it out ! It was polished and in there too. I wrote them a nasty letter about. Not that they care, but oh well.
If your stalling or spinning to much in the simulation mode try turning the sensitivity down in the options. That helps alot and even more so when using the 360 controller.

Re: IL2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey
Never played a flight sim game before but downloaded the demo last next on the 360. Wish it had been released on the PC - as I'm just not used to a console controller. Game seemed fun, would like to play more.

Again, for those of ya looking for the same thing yet on pc, we have a great group here at TG that fly on Thursday nights. We fly co-op and dogfight missions. If you'd like to join in you'll need IL2:1946 patched to 4.09m. For more info, contact me via PM.

Re: IL2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey
I have not once recovered from a stall, even though I've held the sticks like the game says to, I just go into a reversed-direction spin.
What's the secret? does it tell you to hold them longer than you need to?
I'm starting to grasp what stops me from stalling, but knowing how to get out of a stall in the first place would be nice.

Re: IL2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey
P - Retard the throttle to idle. In most aircraft, power hampers the recovery.
A - Ailerons neutral. Many pilots will attempt to recover from the spin using the ailerons. This may actually make the problem worse.
R - Apply full opposite rudder. Apply rudder opposite the rotation of the spin. If you have trouble determining which way the airplane is spinning, look at your turn coordinator or turn needle. It will indicate the direction of rotation.
E - Apply forward elevator. Immediately after applying opposite rudder, apply a quick forward motion on the control yoke and hold anti-spin controls until the aircraft starts to recover.
D - Recover from the dive. Once you have completed the four previous steps, and the rotation stops, recover from the dive. The descent rate may be over 5000 feet per minute and the airspeed will rapidly exceed redline. Remember to neutralize the rudder after the rotation stops.
Remember, stalls and spins can happen from any airspeed and/or attitude. Often they occur at low altitude. Then prevention is the best practice. Altitude is your friend.
