Re: 360 HDMI Port
I understand that my comments can end up being more argumentative than informative. But whether we like it or not, the whole HD debacle is tied closely with the politics.
Yes, he'll need HDMI (or DVI) in order to view protected content at it's native resolution. But I would like him to know WHY he needs to. And the why is as I stated, that it's all politics, not the hardware.
You just can't separate the politics from the technical aspects of the HD "wars" without only giving half the story.
This isn't like having to upgrade your video card to view the latest graphics in BioShock. Your old hardware probably might actually not be able to push the graphics. This is someone forcing you to throw away your perfectly good hardware to use what they want you to.
If my reading is correct, component is perfectly capable to push native 1080p resolutions and is considerably cheaper. It also has the benefit of having support through most decently priced hardware.
I have chosen not to support HDMI for a few reasons based upon my research into the whole ordeal. This probably won't do much if anything to hurt the progression of it, but I would like to give anyone who is interested in the specifics all the information I can.
But I haven't found anything to combat my statement that HDMI is not out there to benefit the consumer.
From what I know of the 360, the standard component connect will allow native 1080 I or P for games that support it. The only time it would cause an issue is from watching HD movies from XBLive or if he blew the money on the HD DVD player. But if all he is worried about is viewing the GoW in it's best resolution, the component will work just fine.

Re: 360 HDMI Port
Here's the quick and dirty:
You'll want HDMI if you plan on viewing HD content at its full resolution. If you are not using HDMI then your video signal will be purposely degraded by the hardware so you can NOT view HD content at its full resolution.
Why?
Hollywood doesn't want people to be able to make perfect HD digital copies of their movies. HDMI encrypts the digital signal from the HD content source (HD DVD, BluRay, DirecTV) all the way to the display processor on the TV. If you don't have HDMI you can't support the encryption and as such your picture will be degraded at the HD source to prevent you from making a perfect HD copy.

Re: 360 HDMI Port
I guess the only exception is the xbox HDdvd player? Since it just uses component and works at full HD.

Re: 360 HDMI Port
No, that's not an exception at all. If you're not playing HDCP protected video then you won't see any degradation of the video. The movie studios have gone with alternative protection for HD-DVD and BluRay for the time being, but that doesn't mean they can tag on HDCP in the future once they are confident that most people have HDMI capable displays.
Look for this to occur after the government mandated conversion over to HD broadcasting.

Re: 360 HDMI Port
When you say content via the 360, does this include games or pretty much movies?
