Today I'd like to present Brink, a brand new first person shooter set in the near future on the man made island "The Ark". The Ark is a green nuts dream, designed as a completely self sufficient floating man made city, it was supposed to be paradise. Now the global environmental crisis is real, threatened with rising sea levels, thousands of refugees have swarmed to the ark as their last hope. You the player get to choose one of two sides; the Security forces trying to sustain some form of law and order, or the Resistance fighting for what they believe is there fair share of the resources.
One of the cool and interesting features in Brink is "SMART", Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain. What Bethesda has tried to do is make the limitations of modern fps go away. If you see it you can go over, under or around it in a smooth quick progression. In practice the game blinds free-running with fps game-play. You can slide, jump, bounce off of or hurdle walls, or just run around like a monkey on crack, all the while enjoying everything you would find in an fps.
Brink also offers a high level of character customization rarely seen in a first person shooter. You can change all the normal things you would expect; skin tone, facial structure, body type and clothing. One of the coolest things you can change is body type. There are currently three representing a skinny, muscular, and hulk body type. Each body type has different levels of health and movement. The skinny type can move faster but has less health. Body type also effects weather or not you can carry some of the heavier weapons. If there is one downside to this, is that there is no option for female characters, so for all you girl's out there (guys in real life?), you're just gonna have to man up so to speak.
One of my main fears as a gamer and TG member is spending 50 bucks on another run of the mill shoot-em up. I'm sick and tired of shooters that promote the individual over the team. To often its about your kill death ratio, not what you can do for the team. In Brink its different. Each class in the game a specific and important role on the team, from the medics healing to the engineers turrets. The game also has a feature that you can pull up, that will give you different objectives to accomplish to help the main objective.
Brink also allows you to level up and play with the same character, through all three play-styles in the game; Single-player, Coop, and multi-player. Multi-player is playable of to 16 players, 8 vs 8 . The game is reported to drop with free dedicated server files on release date for the pc version through Steam. The game releases on May 10th and is currently priced at $50 USD. All in all I think Brink will turn out to be a winner.
