  • Rayne's Eye on Independent Gaming: Kerbal Space Program, The Ultimate Playground.

    Dreams
Have you ever had a dream? Ever wanted to make a game or see a game made that gave you the ultimate playground experience? Was that dream linked to space exploration? Well one person had that dream and it came true, and as you'll see coming up in the next two videos, that game is Kerbal Space Program. Made by an indie game Dev known as "Squad". A Mexico city based marketing company trying to transition to game development and starting with a rather ambitious project. So, let's get started taking a look at this wonderful little game?

    The Idea
So what is KSP you ask? Well basically, right now, it's a game about building spaceships, testing them, experiencing failure and building off that failure to do something better the second time. The future on the other hand is full of possibilities and potential as the lead designer and his team really want to make the ultimate space playground experience. They want to allow the player to build their own space program, and eventually venture into building their own solar empire.

    Gameplay
Game-play is really simple...take parts, build rocket, shoot rocket into sky. It's simple at the start, but eventually gets much much bigger as you start shooting for the moon, literally. To your right is a sample image of the VAB, or Vehicle Assembly Building where you build your space ships. As you can see in the image I've built myself a rocket already, this one is designed purely for orbital maneuvers around the games main planet, Kerbin. As you can see in the image there's a list of parts on the left hand side, that you can drag and drop into the main space to help build the rocket. On the far right hand is your "staging" set up, which lets you tell the rocket what to fire, and separate and when. So far so good right? Right. As for what happens when you get to the launch pad and get to the point of flight? Well the game supports joystick flight and game pad flight, or keyboard flight with WASD controls. It has a nav ball which helps with navigation, and several other nifty features such as an altimeter, speed meter and other things which will be shown in the videos below. So please sit back, relax and enjoy the game-play and interview with the man behind the dream of Kerbal Space Program.

As a note, this game's community is growing rapidly in support of the games future, if you'd like to take part and help this project grow please take a look at the Forums located here: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php . Also if you're interested in other no projects as well, KSP has it's own web comic coming down the pipeline, started by two members from the community. The web comic is located here, www.kerbalcomics.com . Please note the first official comic will go up on the 1st of February.

Thanks for watching, listening, and reading!

Thanks for the write up. I'm enjoying playing around with it but I'm a lousy rocket designer it seems.
