Reminder about name changing: CHANGE YOUR NAME TO YOUR MOST RECOGNIZABLE NAME PRIOR TO OPTING IN TO CAPTAINS!!!

We'll be continuing the 3 map random rotation to start the night, you wont know what maps or in what order but I'll pick one of each from each group: (veil, summit, tram, biodome), (mineshaft, refinery, descent, docking), (jambi, Kodiak, eclipse, caged).

Games start at 7pm CST like always. I'll announce the password to the server 20 minutes before starting time. Be sure to filter for passworded servers. Please review the thread below from previous weeks about the rules going forward.

Here I was wondering if you were going to post the password for the server. Realized you said CST, I live in EST, have another hour to wait.

Agreed. A great night. I think aliens won every round but one, but (almost) every round was a great, close match.

Tonight I also saw less conceding until it was really over, and very little argument or negativity on the chances a team stood. I want to commend the community for that.

In specifics, I want to thank @Roland for believing in our team on Caged when we were considering a repick due to teams. We won the first round and fought hard on the second.

All in all a great Captains night!

Re: Mirage is back for Captain's Night 10/10

              Story time:

One of the games I played we were at 3/6 concede votes (silently made), and after a little bit I (as the captain) spoke up and said we should concede. Votes went up to 5/6, but mirage then spoke up and said something along the lines of: "Why are we conceding? We're at two hives with full tech and two more fades on the way. Don't concede, we can win this." I think that worked basically exactly how it should to avoid the negativity and to not distract from the game except when neccessary.

              1. The silent votes were a good non-disruptive way to start the conversation without impacting morale, clogging the comms, or distracting from the game.
              2. When the votes hit 3/6 it was evidence that morale was definitely suffering and at that point I spoke up to voice my opinion.
              3. As the votes continued to climb, mirage spoke up and did what was the only other alternative at that point: provided some optimism and leadership and rallied the team (not a small order, and sadly not one I was able to provide myself last night).

I don't think we would have won that game without the concede vote and resulting rallying. I think we would have continued to slowly lose as people's morale got sapped and as they continued to lose focus.

Also even though I was the captain, my vote didn't count for more than anyone else's. I like that, it's how it should work.

Sounds like he shed light on "new" information. I'm guessing some teammates didn't realize new competitive options (fades, in this case) were imminent, and it sounds like others found hope in those overlooked options. That's good ingredients for countering competitive apathy.

For being so different, that scenario sounds so similar to "don't concede. we've got two hives and full tech!", which I hear all the time, when we're deep in a losing rut, and /nothing/ new is imminent.

Yeah, I think it also included mentioning that we'd kept their res down and that in general they we were not that far behind (and although we were losing ground, the fades would help to retake it).

Besides the tech and economy aspects, there's also the whole complexity of how your team has been working together and communicating and such vs how the other team has. Even when down in economy and tech, if the other team hasn't been working well together and has been making lots of mistakes there is an opportunity to use teamwork to pull off a win. Those are games I prefer to keep fighting, if the team can come together and change their behavior (which normally requires some substantial leadership efforts).

Re: Mirage is back for Captain's Night 10/10

Yep. The inverse just happened. Marines had two tech points and central on Mineshaft, but conceded as soon as they lost a tech point, despite good standings still.

The comment made in the RR is that it was understood the marines were outmatched by the aliens coordination, and they felt on the losing side.

I used to blanket hate concede as too many games are lost in the mind and not on the field, but lately the games are really becoming great matches, even outside of Captains.
