Fascinating read about NS prototyping in Flayra's blog.

Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Zephyr: Apophis is clearly a highly sophisticated self-aware AI construct that runs on a highly modified toaster oven in Wyzcrak's basement.

The commander is in the center, the squad leaders circle him, and the grunts surround their squad leaders.
NS with squad leaders. That would be so hawt.

This specific story works well for the close-combat feel of NS, but I've written a different (preliminary) story for the larger-scale conflicts in NS2.
    mmmmmmmmmmm delicious...

I have an incredibly early "tech demo" of NS. It's amazing how archaic it all is. There's some stuff that was in the final game, such as a pop up menu. But then the demo of alien team involves selecting an evolution (which plays the starcraft "Evolution Complete" clip), which then gives them the hornet gun from half life-- It's nothing totally crazy but just to see what the game looked like that early on and to think that one day it did become ns, is pretty cool.
It's like browsing the first few pages of the mapping forum's "post your screenshot" topic and seeing the really early pics of ns_metal and ayumi

      EDIT:
you can get a copy of it off fileplanet still
      http://old.fileplanet.com/index.asp?file=64479 ... err maybe not

EDIT2: Fileplanet doesn't seem to work, I'll host it for a bit:

        New blog entry
Different than previous entries, but entirely entertaining.
