  • Captains Night 8/19 - 8PM Central

Lots to draw our attention to this week.

    ) We're taking new sh_laps track submissions.

    ) We've got new spawns on ns2_mesh.

) We've launched new TGNS Badges again, so watch the scoreboard and check your list of badges for new stuff. Unchanged: there's no master list, and there's no way to track progress. One day, maybe...

) How we use our reserved slots has changed to make accidental bumps less likely.

) Being AFK in the Ready Room can now lead to Captains opt-in removal if someone else tries to opt-in while you're AFK. You see a message when this happens (it will be in your console log when you return). Unchanged: joining Spec removes your opt-in.

) As the Captains Board has been reliable for some time, most of the right-side green HUD text is gone from the Captains UI.

) Also, the KD crosshairs on the Captains Board consider Assists now. That's new, so it might need tweaking, so be patient if the crosshairs on the Captains Board seem a bit off tonight. Whether tonight or soon, the goal of that crosshair icon is to designate folks who are remarkably strong Marine battle assets.

) Lastly, your game client will now automatically reconnect you to TGNS when the game server crashes. Immediately begin investigating any red plug as you like, but know that, if the problem is a server crash, your client will automatically reconnect you (and everyone else) in just a few more seconds.

Thanks for your participation throughout the week, everyone. You're doing a wonderful thing for NS2 by participating in a community, as communities offer this title's best experience.

Anyone familiar with our rules is welcome to join us tonight at 8:00PM Central for a curated, password-protected event (I'll post the password in another post below just before 8:00PM Central). Here is a rundown of the event:

    Fellowship:
Throughout all of Captains Night, use the player name by which TGNS regulars best know you. Captains Night is a special time to come together with known regulars and friends.

    Playing BOTH Rounds:
Don't play unless you can reliably stay for the entire map (mid-map emergency? tell your team and bail. dinner and/or friends showing up does not an emergency make).

This expectation is important to participants, and admins protect it.

    Taking a Break:
Each map begins with a two-minute break for food, bathroom, and fellowship. Except for these breaks, don't AFK during the event.

After each break, the Captains are identified for the current map.

    Becoming a Captain:
TGNS regulars known to participants are invited to Captain and personalize team selections on Captains Night. The first player to volunteer as Captain selects his opponent Captain. This selection should prioritize gameplay quality, while the team-picking selections should prioritize competitive strength.

    Opting In:
Player opt-ins open up once both Captains are ready. If you miss the opt-in window for a given map, speak up and we'll get you playing on the next map for sure (if not immediately).

    Selecting Teams:
As team selections begin, listen for instruction. Only Captains speak during team selection -- text chat is always available to everyone (and, of course, voicecomm opens up to all players once teams are formed).

    Gameplay:
Captains Night is everyone's curated opportunity to apply our most satisfying teamwork, communicative tactics, and great fellowship. Try your hardest, but have fun together!

Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Sudden conclusion tonight, all, as the box hosting our game server went offline suddenly. I'll look into that.

Great games, all. So much fun. Thanks again for joining! :)

The box can't handle Nom not being first pick.

I was going to say ... I was on Nom's team so it would have been a victory ... but then I remembered I was in the comm chair recycling the arms lab so I could drop an infantry portal.
