  • Captains Night 10/7 - 8PM Central

Anyone familiar with our rules is welcome to join us tonight at 8:00PM Central for a curated, password-protected event (I'll post the password in another post below just before 8:00PM Central). Here is a rundown of the event:

    Fellowship:
Throughout all of Captains Night, use the player name by which TGNS regulars best know you. Captains Night is a special time to come together with known regulars and friends.

    Playing BOTH Rounds:
Don't play unless you can reliably stay for the entire map (mid-map emergency? tell your team and bail. dinner and/or friends showing up does not an emergency make).

This expectation is important to participants, and admins protect it.

    Taking a Break:
Each map begins with a short, announced break for food, bathroom, and fellowship. Except for these breaks, don't AFK during the event.

After each break, the Captains are identified for the current map.

    Becoming a Captain:
TGNS regulars known to participants are invited to Captain and personalize team selections on Captains Night. The first player to volunteer as Captain selects his opponent Captain. This opponent selection should prioritize gameplay quality, but the team-picking selections should absolutely prioritize competitive strength.

    Opting In:
Player opt-ins open up once both Captains are ready. If you miss the opt-in window for a given map, speak up and we'll get you playing on the next map for sure (if not immediately).

    Selecting Teams:
As team selections begin, listen for instruction. Only Captains speak during team selection -- text chat is always available to everyone (and, of course, voicecomm opens up to all players once teams are formed).

    Gameplay:
Captains Night is everyone's curated opportunity to apply our most satisfying teamwork, communicative tactics, and great fellowship. Try your hardest, but have fun together!

Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Zephyr: Apophis is clearly a highly sophisticated self-aware AI construct that runs on a highly modified toaster oven in Wyzcrak's basement.

If you're a regular to Captains night and haven't recently taken the time to read the announcements event rules/expectations above, please read it again from time to time. The event works best when everyone knows how it's run.

Server changes during the past week:

) See who you've crossed paths with on the game server

) Steam IMs sent to Replay contributors are now batched and sent once per day (this removes the last of TGNS Bot messaging you during gameplay)

) Captains force-start timer makes noises to remind you game start is imminent

) Post-game attacks are modded back in (UWE recently removed them -- my guess is they'll return to stock eventually)

) Post-game feedback UI disappears (more importantly: gives you back control of your mouse) more quickly after thanking you

) The SMs among you will recall that I regularly and quietly use SM chat on the game server to THANK YOU. I've begun daily (typically just once each evening) all-chat mentions on the game server of the necessity for TG Supporting Members among our regular players, as those funds allow TG to provide our many servers (game server, Portal web server, databases, mod backup server, forums, my Game Officer yacht, etc, etc). I've always left it largely unspoken, arguably to the point that non-SMs willing and prepared to help simply have no idea how critical a role those subscriptions play in our existence. TG -- and TGNS by extension -- definitely improves from the financial support of anyone who's here night after night and who has the means and willingness to help. We just upgraded both our NS2 game server and our forum software, and growth is absolutely dependent on folks helping out financially, so THANK YOU again.

) WIP: only in the game's first 3 minutes, I'm attempting automation to show spawners intelligent, worth-paying-attention-to "open lane" questions citing open natural lanes by name (e.g. "Is Skylights lane open?") when the early team seems to have forgotten one side particularly -- this is proving... ambitious... for me; feedback welcome unless/until I abandon it.

) Unchanged: We're still experimenting with Onos strength. Game-start messages explain details (no changes during past week).

) Unchanged: Captains games still impose a personal resources penalty if the game starts without a commander

) Unchanged: remi's still awesome (despite his not reading down this far).
