  • Alien to Marine loss:win ratio

I used to play on a server that had something where it counted alien wins and marine wins and on what map for about a month just for statistics (not k:d, just wins and losses). As it turned out, aliens won the vast majority of the time on the maps except on tanith, veil, eclipse where it evened out. Is there a possible reason for this, or all the other maps just bad? Would such a program like this be something for informational purposes here, or would it place more emphasis on losing teamwork and more on "aliens always win this map, so lets not try very hard" mentality?

At the least, it was definitely interesting to view.

I'd be interesting in seeing the win:loss ratio but I don't think it's needed. I know when aliens are gonna lose, it's when I'm on the team. Bad juju.

If the information was available I would be interested in looking at it. Depending on the server, and the regulars there, I would imagine you would get different results. Not everyone is equally good at aliens as they are at marines. Any trend toward one or the other in a finite group of people (the regulars) would have a significant impact on the overall win:loss ratio. The information would however be relevant to playing on this server, which is the only server I play on anyway.

It would need to record the players' steamIDs and names too, otherwise it'd be completely erroneous.

I don't really see how this would help. If you tried to factor in which players were on which team it would become incredibly more complicated, and require many more games to get an accurate determination.

What it would tell you is on average what team wins on what maps, you factor out the player aspect by having a large number of recorded games (a month's worth or so). If certain players tend to favor certain teams, it shouldn't reflect any differently on what team wins when you realize they will most likely continue to favor that one team over the other.

If you wanted to apply a universal rule for what maps tended to be won by what teams, you would want to record win:loss ratio on many servers to eliminate the player bias, instead of trying to factor out each player.

Of course I could be wrong, But I believe this topic has been discussed before in these forums. Considering that and considering that we don't have a pluggin for it, I would have to believe that someone decided against it or that the idea was just forgotten.

I have had the idea of writing this stuff down before like what players were on what teams, strat used and who won for games I've been in. I never started doing it cause of a fine combo of being just a titch too lazy and feeling like I was cheating (almost like counting cards in a casino) for having statistics of what team was best to be on at a given map and player base to win. The hardcore gamer in me want's that kind of info, but at the same time I think it would take away something for me to have that much of an educated guess on the outcome. Maybe I just Like not knowing if I'll win or lose. Or maybe just like that it's possible to change a trend if the people involved try hard enough.

Re: Alien to Marine loss:win ratio

For BFTG we used to use a modified HL Stats for Natural Selection script which recorded all sorts of information (players, their steam IDs, who participated, what teams they were on and for how long, damage dealt, resources, favorite weapon, accuracy, etc). This also included marine and alien wins, since matches were played as many games as possible in 12 hour stretches.

As for those 3 maps that you (aeroripper) mentioned. One big reason is the enviroment/set that the map makers used for those maps.

ns_eclipse, ns_veil and ns_tanith seem to be the most popular maps (ref. ns.org). Maps such as ns_mineshaft, ns_agora and ns_metal tend to turn most people away (ref. AmpedNews).

Its not the resource layout, map structure, location layout, but the atmosphere which makes these maps naturally more liked or more enjoyable for marines to play vs ns_bast or some of the custom maps like ns_delta (which is pretty cool but too dangerous for competitive use). That is whats most important to your average player rather than to a pro/vet/old player who is more interested in tactical information.

I think, if you didn't want to record all the players you'd at LEAST want to know who was comming.

I guess you could just aggregate enough data, I'm just not so keen on that "wide swatch" approach.
