Do we agree with this? Are there exceptions? How will it change the gentlemen's agreements and/or rules on our server?

    Re: building in vents

I only view blocked vents as explotive in certain situations.

    - The vent must be entirely blocked in the entrance or travel of the vent. This involves such tiny vents as the ones between viaduct and powersilo on ns_nothing. A CC blocking the vent on the platform between the two ladders, in the middle of the two vents, should not be allowing. Not should building an object inside of the vent, as the vent is only 32x32 units.

However...should the vent be accessable, and usable, from all directions, but with an object simply HINDERING it, is not considered an exploit in any form in my book. An example would be the wide vent running between the area between generator and viaduct from the cargo hive. If say, an armory or somesuch was dropping inside the vent, in such a way that it did not hinder typical passage through the vent except as an annoyance (32x32 usable space, 32x32 is the size requires for skulks, crouching marines, and couching fades, as well as lerks) this should be allowed.

In summary...complete vent blocking should not be allowed, while partial blocking, as long as reasonable space (32x32 travel passage is maintained) should be.

      Re: building in vents

I agree that blocking the entrance or exit of a vent (I fail to see how "ground level" is relevant, other than you're less likely to block one that isn't) hurts gameplay more than it helps. One could argue that stance is supported by the fact that we rarely, if ever, see that tactic used.

What you do see from time to time is building inside "vents." Well.. wait a second.. I guess you really DON'T see building in vents, do you?* I mean, when I started this post, I was thinking of the "vent" outside Fusion Hive (ns_tanith), on the Waste Hive side. There's that little space that you can seige from (used to the hive, but now just everything between that space and the hive).

Do we define a "vent" as something that a vanilla marine can't stand erect in (yeah. we get it. ha. ha.)? That would allow us to continue using that space outside Fusion Hive, or relocating to the "vent" between Chem, Marine Spawn, and Reactor Room, or other similar situations.

Can anyone think of a map location that allows building in a vent where a marine can't stand erect?

Right. I don't think anyone here is going to contest vent blocking. Well written.

Yup. The instance I mentioned about the vent between viaduct/generator area from cargo is buildable without standing marine room. I regularly drop an armory in there (not in the tall part...the 32 height area), to deploy mines in the cargo hive from that vent with aid of a JP. Its not easily bilebombable, and its fairly easy to defend. I'm quite confident that the height is only 32...possibly 48. In any case, a marine cannot stand in that area, but structures may be built there.

            Re: building in vents

IMO, If the vent is tall enough for a marine to stand up, you can build in it, if only a skulk/gorge/lerk/crouched fade can stand it in, then no.
IMO, if the vent was meant to be blocked, it would be weldable, so imo blocking vents w/buildings is illegal.

Blocking vents = illegal. Building in vents = legal. I don't see why they would see this as an exploit.... I mean if there is room to build it why would you not be able to build there (other then to prevent blocking of course).

My thoughts exactly. Welding was put in the game to intentionally impede alien movement in vents. Why would it be there if placing a building was an aceptable alternative?

Bulding within a vent, however, gets fuzzy. I propose to define a "vent" by any narrow passage that doesn't have a name in the map (and doen't pick it up by the room above it). Some hallways don't have names, but obviously aren't vents and vent-like areas have names. For example "red room" is fair game for building, but kind of seems like a vent.

                    Re: building in vents

I think we should define vents as an area where marines cannot stand to their full height. This allows building in "vent like areas" which are, in general, acceptable building locations.

                        Re: building in vents

Yeah - that takes care of all the "vent" situations I thought of --

tonight in particular is the vent below the ladders on Vent hive, ns_origin. That's where you siege the hive from, but marines can stand in there. However, putting the cannon there makes it pretty tight.

I'm ok with the "you must be this high to ride" requirement.
