  • Ways to improve FPS?

    This is strange.

I know it seems like I have been having problems as of late. Well, I have. This new computer is working well, but it's giving me some grief over certain things. For example:

The new comp is a 3ghz 1gb ram with a geforce fx 5600 128 mb graphics card.

My old computer was a 1ghz 256 mb ram with a geforce 4 mx 440.

New comp's fps in NS: ~30
Old comp's fps in NS: ~50

Something's wrong, as you can tell. I'm using refreshlock (well, the new version, ReForce, to be exact), but that doesnt seem to be helping. I'm running 1024x768 in d3d (the game crashes when i try opengl).

    Any suggestions?

EDIT: Oh, and my fps_max is set to 100 on both.

Well, since i no longer have a cd copy of halflife, i did just transfer my sierra folder from one computer to the other. I know that's a big no-no, but the game itself works fine. Except the fps issue. Could that be the cause?

Turn the sound card hardware acceleration all the way down on your new computer's sound card and see if that helps.

          your FPS might be capped..

i think the command is "fps"

and it'll tell you what its set at...

just set it to 100 "fps 100"

          framerate should just jump up...

LOL you love this setting dont you.

Miko I would have to say that you should reinstall HL. Reason is when a game gets installed it links many registry keys and makes a bunch too. If i was you get you CDKey out of your registry, (I have a Program that can help if needed) and download a new iso off of Direct connect.

I know downloading is bad but he did buy it and he has his key just not the physical disk.(ALL POSTS ABOUT THE LEGALITY WILL BE DELETED)

Next thing to try is different detonator drivers or even the New Forceware drivers by Nvidia. I am currently using a beta driver made by a 3rd party called Omega and I am very pleased by the results.BTW i have the FX5600 with 256mb

              Detonator/Forceware can be found here:
              http://www.guru3d.com/

              Omega drivers:
              http://www.omegacorner.com/index.html

IF all of that doesnt work just catch me some day and we can tweak the crap out of the HL engine.

I know cobra. You were the one who told me about refreshlock, although that wasn't working for me.

                  YOU ARE THE FPS MAN.

                  So, what's your trick? :D

Why are you using D3D? I get 30 fps on d3d, and 100 on openGL.

                    3) Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine.

                        LOL!

Pokerface, I was just about to respond to tempus' comment, but indeed, you have my back.

Anyways, OpenGL may work after I reinstall halflife clean. I'm gonna work on that tonight.
