  • Another "seeding map" with custom gameplay

    It was discussed tonight between games (and in threads on this forum) that more custom gamemode maps like arclight would be fun. I'm up for just about anything, and can build a level myself or in collaboration with [MENTION=56359]YerMom[/MENTION] or anyone else who is interested. [MENTION=38]Wyzcrak[/MENTION] can do any necessary lua coding.

    Two ideas for a theme arose out of tonight's brief discussion:
    • Escort the VIP
    • Rescue the hostages


    One concern that comes to mind is those ideas would require a large map. Large maps are a lot of work to build, balance, and polish. A small map project stands a much better chance of being successful.

    As [MENTION=8124]aeroripper[/MENTION] pointed out in the arclight discussion thread, that there are other interesting ideas that could be implemented in a relatively small map, such as having a giant weldable and breakable power node in a room, or having lots of "crushers" and/or other environmental hazards. If we can iron out a solid plan, I would be willing to sink some time into the level editor to make it happen.

    I think I've got a new idea.

    I'm going to keep it quiet until I show/discuss it with Wyz some to see if he thinks it's a good idea from a coding perspective.

    Give me a week or two to discuss/put something together for feasibility and I'll post it here for support.

    I just had a whole page of idea typed out and as I was explaining it I realized that it sucked, but if I did X different it may be cool... so I was like meh, I'm just going to discuss it with Wyz for coding possibilities and build a prototype to see if it would even be a thing we could do before I spit out a page screaming all "LOLOLOLOLOLOL IDEAAAAA TIIIIIMMMMMMEEEEE" and people get all excited and it not even be something we can do.

    To give you a general idea, without going in to too much detail, if you played Halo at all on Xbox, the obstacle course sniper custom maps is where the idea comes from. Obviously won't be the same thing, but I think it will be doable.

      This idea has kind of sputtered into nothing.

      I've got a very basic map sort of made... but it's not even close to being anywhere near playable or even considered a map, really.

      But I had a thought just now...

      These seed maps are pretty simple but they take a lot of collaboration and effort from Wyz and myself (and whoever else)...

      ...and arclight really isn't played all THAT much.

      I'd much prefer to cater to the popular night than I would the semi-popular time-wasting activity.

      So, with that said, I'm wondering if you, [MENTION=33317]Brian[/MENTION] (or anyone else, for that matter), would be willing to take the helm on a custom captains night map with my assistance.

      I'm currently working full time and lots of over time, studying for my CCENT (which is stupid, btw) and studying Java to be able to develop apps in my free time. That's not to mention parenting, working on the house, working on a new 4x4 project for hunting, scouting for hunting season, my greenhouse, our chickens and their coops, and various other small projects not worth mentioning.

      Honestly, I just don't have the time to helm a major project. BUT, I think that a custom Captains map for TGNS could prove to be a very epic thing, especially with Wyz coding solutions in to it whenever they are needed.

      If you aren't up to it, I'll take the helm when I can (next year sometime?).

        I'm willing to put effort into a mapping project, but nothing major. Something small, on the scale of arclight, is all I am really interested in. Going much bigger than that, the amount of work multiplies while the value doesn't necessarily increase.

          Fair enough. I don't really have time for either at the moment. We will see where this goes when I finish my exams... gonna be a while, though.
