  • Need help: Looking for Mobo/CPU/RAM

Hey guys. I've recently accepted the fact that my Mobo/CPU/RAM combo is out of date and dying. lol Great system that I've had for years.

Anyway, I'm horrible in knowing the good places to find the best price and such so could I get some help? I not not looking to buy NOW, but in the near(er) future and I just want to get an idea. Price should be at most $500 or so.

I have a video card, HDDs, disk drive, PSU(Though I might get a new one). So those items are fine with me. Could you wizards give me a hand please?

Nothing like a blank slate and a reasonable budget but list the gpu and hard drives and any personal preferences to branding you have and it would narrow this a bit as the choices have never been as strong as they are now. Please, list the psu on hand and whether you have the ability to test the rails to make sure its still performing to specs and I'd be more than happy to try and list Intel and AMD options you might feel appealing.

I'd also recommend that you amend the budget to include a SSD boot drive and Win7 with a new build especially if you are waiting till after the first of the year.

Re: Need help: Looking for Mobo/CPU/RAM

I picked up these parts for my new build, and I have been very pleased. It's not i5 or i7 hardware, but honestly, are those really needed yet?

      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115055

My total cost when I purchased these parts back in Oct. was around $420, leaving me money to upgrade to win7 in my budget. I plugged 2 extra gigs of older mushkin ram in as well to run 6 [email protected] instead of 4 gigs at 1066. No Vt on that cpu, not that that is a big issue, but if you are one of the few who needs VT, that cpu wont work for you.

I'll take a look at those morgan.

Heres the list of parts that I have to carry over:

1x 400 Watt PSU. No idea on rails.
        1x IDE DVD drive
        1x BFG Geforce 8500 GT(the 1Gb version)
        3x IDE hard drives
        1x SATA HDD
1x ATX case in great condition

I don't have SSD or Win 7. I have a copy of Vista 64 floating around here somewhere, but I would prefer Win 7. Though, I can get student versions of that I think.

Also, I do have a Frys electronics near me. I'll have to check their site.

Re: Need help: Looking for Mobo/CPU/RAM

Morganan actually recommended the same case I did for Sledgehammer's new rig, won't argue with it at all and the 775 socket has been the most flexible socket to date but to equal the performance of what an I7 or I5 will do with that socket still costs $1500 (last time I checked after the I7 debut) but this would work admirably.

So in counterpoint, let me list an I5 build which does take into account recent advances in tech.

            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115215
            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231277
            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813131404R

So we're at $408. Morganan's psu above would work (and you do need another) but I've found the modulars to be well worth the price differential.

            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341036

With rebates, $498 and you could upgrade for several years without issue.

You must of clicked as I did.
Looks really good, you'd still want 1 more stick of mem for Win7 but it would do and the Q6700 is still a beast.

Re: Need help: Looking for Mobo/CPU/RAM

If I went with Win 7 then I would go to 4Gb of RAM. I'm really like that one from Amazon. I have a socket 939 which I bought at the end of life for that one. I didn't know at that time.

Thanks guys. This has given me the ideas I need. I like the one from amazon because it would give me enough room in the budget to include more RAM and Win 7.

Re: Need help: Looking for Mobo/CPU/RAM

I still run my "antiques", a P4 3.4 running 3.57 and a 939 with an FX60 both Vista machines, running 4 gigs of ram and Dx10 cards. I got lucky that the mobo manufacturer for my Am2 board had a BIOS update to let me move to AM2+ or no way it would have kept up. I'm going to try and push this one until 2011 before I build again baring something unforeseen.

The kit listed with 4 gigs and a PSU comes up to $471, might be time to move up a bit .

On a side note, I can get Win 7 Pro for $40 right now. I think I'll do that.
