I am looking to upgrade my 8600 gts geforce, but I am not sure if I should just get a better processor or if its my video card that needs upgrading.

I have an BFG 8800 GTX OC2 which I am not currently using. Let me know if you are interested ... it works perfectly .. replaced it when I built a new rig.

I don't know AMD processors that well, but I have an eVGA 9800GTX that's not doing anything that I could sell you. It looks like you're semi-local to me as well so no shipping expenses either.

processor is on the low end, what games do you think you are getting bottlenecks in?...if it BFBC2...then yes your CPU is definitely limiting the game

Re: looking for 8800 gt geforce

Well, on one hand your CPU is mediocre, and on the other hand, upgrading from an 8600 to an 8800 of any flavor wouldn't provide you with a noticeable increase in performance. If it were me, I'd start with the graphics card, but you'll have to do better than an 8800. I'm sure you could find a good deal on a used Radeon 4850, which is a great card. They're fairly inexpensive new as well. I don't know what your price range is, but these "Best Graphics Cards for the Money" articles that Tom's Hardware does are a good starting point.

On the bright side, your machine is still AWESOME-O.

All I want to be able to do is play ARMA 2 on high while being able to record at a respectable frame rate

Re: looking for 8800 gt geforce

well if you don't care about DX11....it's hard to beat the ATI 4890 for power given per dollar spent, in the 5000 series I would say the 5850 or above? realize that you are kind of opening a can of worms here. Upgrade the video card will probably mean installing a new power supply ( I am guessing your HP is probably a 350W PS) Your CPU is an AM2 socket..which on new egg they only offer 2 cpu's as it is the older socket and on its way out the door. PC's are like a house of cards most the time when you buy a "store" brand....you usually can't just change one or 2 items.

Re: looking for 8800 gt geforce

That 4890 in the link was out of stock... here's an XFX 4850 for around $130, still a good card and a great buy. XFX has a lifetime warranty as well. You'll be looking at almost a $300 card if you want to jump to the more current 5850.

And like venman said, you'll probably be SOL trying to update your processor unless you go to ebay to find an AM2.

If your budget right now is $500, you could save a bit more money and wait til you can afford $600-700 and just build a new machine. You can put together a very respectable gaming rig with that budget, especially if you use the case from your old machine (with a new power supply, of course). It won't run the latest and greatest at max resolution, but you'll be able to play just about anything you throw at it if you do it right. Here's an idea of what you could build for $622 (minus $55 if you want to use your own case). Not a power-gaming rig but I reckon it would be OK.

                              Processor

                              Graphics Card

That would use up just about all of your $500, but that processor is a beast and the graphics card "ain't no slouch"

I have pretty much that exact setup with the exception of the graphics card. Mine is the XFX of the card I linked.

With that you can run ArmA on "Stupid High" and get great FPS. I have everything maxed on mine with FRAP's going and only lose at max 10FPS.

Your PSU might be a problem though. Once you start getting into high end stuff that can Max ArmA you need to look a a minimum 750w
