  • Lateral Thinking Puzzle #6 - The Ticket [solved]

    INTRODUCTION
Lateral Thinking Puzzles, unlike most puzzles, are inexact. In a sense, they are a hybrid between puzzles and storytelling. In each puzzle, some clues to a scenario are given, but the clues do not tell the full story. Your job is to fill in the details and complete the story. There could be more than one solution to any given puzzle, but generally only one explanation is truly satisfying.

    RULES
You fill in the details to complete the story by asking "Yes / No" questions about the story. My response to your "Yes and No" questions will be one of the following: yes, no, or irrelevant. Sometimes the response may be "simplify your question", if your question is too complicated to answer with a single yes or no.

You will be tempted to use google. DO NOT. It will be unsatisfying for you and everyone else. Hints may be provided by me, if everyone seems to have hit a roadblock. Good luck and have fun!

    The Puzzle

A woman is pulled over for speeding. The officer gives her a warning, but the woman won't accept it and demands that he issue a citation. The officer complies, and she promptly pays the fine.

    Hints

    Solution
The woman is the wife of the Chief of Police. To avoid any appearance of favoritism or corruption, she urged the patrolman to issue her the citation she deserved.

Re: Lateral Thinking Puzzle #6 - The Ticket

Does the woman benefit in any way from paying the citation as opposed to accepting the warning (other than her benefiting morally)?

    YES

Is the woman a diplomat (foreign or other) and therefore has some kind of immunity?

I am not terribly confident with that question :)

Did she or does she have any sort of relationship with the officer?

nope, no tricks in the wording... a regular police officer gives the lady a regular speeding ticket :)

Ok, how about the female is the wife or mother of the officer. Therefore the others involved would be the police force, and she demands the ticket to avoid any trouble for her husband/ son.

Is the number of 3rd party members relevant (e.g., does it have to be 1 person? Does it have to be more than 1 person?)?

Does the situation involve a bet or some similar challenge?

Should we assume that she wanted to see the clerk or treasurer to whom the fine was paid?
