  • Booze, Beer, Wine and Others

For some that dont know, In RL, I am an alcohol buyer for a rather large retailer in NJ. I have over 12 yrs experience in the business and many more before that. Wine, Beer and Booze are my passions (so is TG) and I would like to offer any assistance, answer any questions, discuss any topic to anyone that has any in regards to these fields. Feel free to either post here or PM me any questions you have and i will get back to you ASAP.

So far this summer I am really enjoying Victorys "Summer Love" Ale.
    Sincerely,

    HiTest

Why does it seem any alcohol (beer) that has ICE in the name make my head hurt? Got any good hangover tricks?

        @ Shane,

A trick that's worked for me:

When you are about to tip over into the "land of the drunks", just stop drinking, take it easier, and grab yourself some water. I usually try and down a cup or two, then switch over to soda or energy drinks. Then back to water until it's time to go home/hit the sack.

I don't wake up with a hangover and I have a dreamless (or maybe I don't remember) peaceful sleep.

        @ HiTest,

If I had known you'd post your blog post here too, I would have posted here instead. Anyways...

Hmm, that's interesting. So would you consider yourself a beer/wine connoisseur?

I want to try some new beers, but don't know what's good and would fit my tastes. Maybe you could recommend some based on my "likes" and "dislikes"?

        Likes:
        - Shock Top
        - Leinenkugels Berry Weiss
--- still haven't tried: Honey Weiss or Sunset Wheat
        - MGD (pretty low on my list now since Shock Top has supplanted it)
        - Guinness Black Lager (had it at a bar beer tasting)
        - Sierra Nevada Torpedo
        - Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
        - Homemade Bach (a friend's dad made some and it wasn't bad)
        - Blue Moon (prefer Shock Top over this)
        - Guiness (it's okay)
        - Tsingtao (rather like this one)

        Dislikes:
        - Chimay (ugh...)
        - Budweiser
        - Newcastle Brown Ale (just don't like the taste)
        - Leinenkugels Fireside Nut Brown
        - Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat (ugh -- were they trying to imitate Leinenkugels Berry Weiss?)

        Meh:
        - Most of the light beers (Coors Lite, Miller Lite, Miller High Life, Busch, PBR, etc)
        - Sapporo
        - Asahi

That's about everything I can think of that I've tried.

Well Acreo, it sounds to me you like the Belgian styled Wheat Beers. You should try Hoeggarden and or Leffe. That might suit your taste buds.
Try them and let me know.

I've been enjoying the resurgence of Narragganset in SE Mass. The lager is drinkable and fine and they make a nice Bock in the spring and now are into a Summer Ale. No longer brewed in RI but in NY state I believe...Back in the day "Gansett" was one of if not the biggest brewery in the U.S. That all ended when A.B. took over the market.

Also have been enjoying the Oskar Blues products of late. Love their Scotch Ale...too $$$ for regular buying though.

Re: Booze, Beer, Wine and Others

I very much agree with the title of this thread.

I really enjoy bottled Budweiser, Chimay (my favorite 'breakfast beer') and above all, Guinness from a good tap. Been way too long since I've had any McEwan's Scotch Ale, too- I can't find it here, and I know you could help me with that, Test! Generally, pale ales are a big no-no for me. As far as wines go, I don't know much about them, but I tend to like heartier reds. Bogle bottles a few varieties that I've discovered within a year or so, and I really like them, and they're not expensive at all. Don't like white wines. Good whisky and tequilas also thrill me, thought the really good whiskies make me cry, 'cause I can't afford them very often.

I also really like Test's stories about his various conferences, and it's been too long since I heard a good one... ;)

I believe after Heineken UK purchased McEwans they pulled it from distribution in US. I could be wrong but thats what i remember hearing years ago. As to conferences, I love how some people get a little frisky after a couple of drinks in a place that is not their home. ;)

@Grunt... Living in boston for most of my adolescent punk rock years has put a fine memory of those gold cans (Narrangansett). Im sure W6 has had a few and so has Bear61.

I like to drink local stuff as much as possible, although only one of the breweries in town bottles and sells through stores. Can't beat a nice cold Nimbus Old Monkeyshine. :)

Or their Oatmeal Stout which I feel is one of the best if not the best Oatmeal Stout made in the US. Not a beer to sip by the pool when its 100 friggin degrees outside. You have to wait till its winter and the temperature drops to 88.

Well I drink Guinness and Heineken. guinness is defenitely not for everyone though.

A tip for drinkers who drink whiskey and rum is to not mix it with cola. I've found that mixing them with cola gives me hangovers the next day and when I drink A good whiskey like Buchanans or Chivas or Blue that I dont get hangovers or any messed up feelings the next day.

^^^ That has a lot to do with the additional sugar.

I thought it had more to do with the gas mixed with alcohol, but that works:D

Someone told me to mention the fact that I went to school for Culinary Arts and I cooked in some of the best restaurants in Manhattan and Boston. Just in case someone needs a little cooking tip or advice.
