A very odd thing just happened. My whole house just shook. Apparently the magnitude 5.9 earthquake was centered in Virginia. It is amazing that I felt it in Pennsylvania, 200 miles away.

Yeah it was crazy. My 7 story office building in Pittsburgh was shaking pretty bad. I've never seen people bound down the stairs that fast.

Im in Central NJ and this place shook for what felt like 3 seconds. I thought wine bottles were going to crash all over the floor.

          Re: East Coast Earthquake

earthquakes in the central and eastern u.s., although less frequent than in the western u.s., are typically felt over a much broader region. East of the rockies, an earthquake can be felt over an area as much as ten times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the west coast. A magnitude 4.0 eastern u.s. Earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source. A magnitude 5.5 eastern u.s. Earthquake usually can be felt as far as 500 km (300 mi) from where it occurred, and sometimes causes damage as far away as 40 km (25 mi).

            Re: East Coast Earthquake

Felt it here in the Washington D.C. area. It seriously disturbed my cats (who are still hiding, except for the fat one, who slept through it). :D I was practicing on the first floor of my house so I just walked outside and continued.

Felt a lot bigger than the 3.6 magnitude earthquake centered >5 mi from me last July. But having that experience, I at least didn't flip out.

Cell phones are more or less down in the D.C. area; my frantic mother had difficulty calling me (then she promptly moved her car out of her office's parking garage). Everything shook for a good 50 seconds.

Coming from the land of earthquakes a 5.9 is nothing. Hopefully everyone is safe. Don't wish them on my worst enemy.

My house shook here in central Jersey but it only felt like a large truck was passing by (for a while)

                  Re: East Coast Earthquake

Got just a rumble like a large truck passing but the state capitol across the river (Albany,NY) evacuated some buildings.

A Virginia nuclear plant about 12 miles from the epicenter is currently in shutdown on backup power.

                    Re: East Coast Earthquake

That was the first earthquake I've felt that actually made the building I was in start swaying. Verizon was down so I couldn't call the kids or the Mrs once my office was evacuated. Everyone is fine, but man what a scare. Hope the rest of the folks out here are ok. I don't know how you west coasters deal with this crap!

City Hall shook here in Hagerstown, MD. At least 5 seconds, maybe 10.
Definitely the worst part was the 30 mins of waiting to hear from all my loved ones...that time was scary for me to say the least.

Next the East Coast gets to see what Hurricane Irene brings us in the coming days.

Felt it here in sc. My office made sounds like what you hear when the air pressure changes as the AC switches on, lots of creaking. I nearly exited the building. Good 30 seconds.

Luckly I was in the car in Central New York so I didnt feel it but I was watching the local news and there was many cases of building shaking and some small items falling off of tables. I just hope everyone near the epicenter is alright.

The damage is pretty widespread here in the DC area.
