  • Today I lost a friend

Today was a bad day. I recently found out my Black Lab of 11 years has cancer. He had a mass in his stomach as well as a mass in his lungs. Vet said we could take him home…he wasn’t in any pain or discomfort….he would just continue to lose weight and get weaker as the disease took hold. I decided that my families last bit of time with him would be his best. We fed him from the table and gave him all the things he had always begged for but never gotten. In his last days he continually met me at the door still eager for me to pet him. When his body was still able he used to religiously go up the stairs every night to check on my kids….I could hear him go from room to room and then back down to sleep by my side of the bed. When I travelled for work he was there to watch over my family….unfortunately my brother in law came over after dark one evening and just walked in the house, a mistake I can assure you he will never make again. It may sound silly to some but he was more than a dog to me. For watching over my family….for playing with my kids gently when he was twice their size…..for being there for them when they were sad and gently nudging or licking them as if to say “I know your sad but I’m here no matter what” For all these things he was to me and my family. What could I possibly do to repay that?
Today I found the answer to that….today I had to let him go. I owed it to him to go in the room where he would be put to sleep and be with him in his last moments….I owed it to him to be there by his side comforting him. I could not let him be in there with all strangers. Today I Lost a guardian for my family, a comforter to my children…….today I lost my friend.

I apologize if his isn't the type of thing we post in here but I didn't know where else to put it. I wanted to just get this stuff off my chest. Here's a pic of him when he was still ok

    Gonna miss ya buddy

Coming from a family that has always had a dog, I totally get how you feel, it sounds like he had a great life and was a great friend to you and your family, and I think you did the right thing in the end.
I know it is a sad time, but I am sure you have an encyclopedia full of great memories to look back on, sitting down with your family and those that knew him and just talking about things he did to make you laugh etc. really helps.

Ven, you have my very deepest, heartfelt condolences on the loss of your friend and family guardian. I wish I had the words to lessen the pain but, they just don't exist. I think the only path to solace is the passage of time, the fond memories you have, and the knowledge that your friend is now free of pain and perhaps in a better place.

I must have some dust in my eye...

          3) Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine.

Well I hope Odie is running wild and free in his favorite place wherever that may be.

It's always hard when a pet dies - I'm sure many of us here know how you feel and can empathise with that. There's not much I can say that will help, but I'll say this anyway: I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Just remember the good times, talk about Odie with your family. Make sure you all remember him as he was before, not how he was during those last days.
Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

You have my condolences. I had to have one of our dogs, Trillian, put down for the same reason last year. It was the toughest thing I ever had to do. My dad confided in me at the time that putting down the dog we had when I was a kid, Speedy, was harder for him than losing his own father. Dogs are such loyal, unconditionally loving friends and it hurts like hell when they're gone.
