  • National Defense Authorization Act 2012

The National Defense Authorization Act is the name of a United States federal law that has been enacted for each of the past 48 fiscal years to specify the budget and expenditures of the United States Department of Defense.[1] The act for 2012, passed by the U.S. Senate, is currently under review by the House of Representatives; it has received critical attention because it may allow the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens wikipedia

The idea being that people suspected of terrorism can be held by the military with out due process, even American citizens. That being a problem in its self, there is also fear regarding what is considered a terrorist, and that this could be used to incarcerate people who may disagree with the government.

    Thoughts?

Specific parts of the bill in question.

Mind you this has already passed the Senate with overwhelming support.

White House has promised a veto if that clause remains in the bill, though they've had the ability to detain US citizens for quite some time.

You do the crime you do the time.

I travel to work into NYC everyday and the members of the military who are stationed there are doing an excellent work and they should have the right to arrest those who are suspected.

That might not be the spirit of the bill, but it lays the legal framework for such accusations.

Pretty much this. I mean, I'd like to think that people wouldn't do something like that, but... humans are humans.

That's why within the bill they should put a "Florida" clause.

Re: National Defense Authorization Act 2012

We could cut 75% of the "Defense" budget and still destroy the entire world. Our defense priorities are a complete farce. It's just another way to funnel money from taxpayers to multinational corporations for things that we don't even need or want. Meanwhile our schools suck, roads and bridges need to be rebuilt, etc.

But the second a liberal stands up and says that, they get accused of "hating the military" or whatever the mindless idiocy that passes for debate these days is. And of course, because Democrats are cowards who can't even stand up for their own objectives, they play right along.

We have the most pathetic governing body in the history of the universe. Pathetic in the sense that there is SOOOOO much that we can accomplish, and yet we don't because we're too ignorant (or just plain stupid) not to fall for the same old tired tactics of saying that if you cut money out of defense, that babies will be eaten and their heads placed on pikes by marauding hoards. Or whatever the fearmongering tactic of the day is.

I could say more stuff vaguely relevant(sp?) to this conversation, but then I'd have to read through lots of political papers and stuff to understand what I'm talking about.

Because theyre ignorant of what it says, which is ok because the people who elect them for the most part are ignorant of what it says. The few who claim to know it so well can read the words but don't understand the concepts. Those who understand the concepts and have read it, are marginalized by saying theyre un American, or Un-Christian, and people think that to be against the government is to be against god and country

I think certain circumstances can warrant it.
Example the military prescence in Grand Central, airports and other public places where there is a military prescence in public places.

Or those military police or military personell should be able to hold the suspect until law enforcement authorities arrive on scene.

I saw the following quote earlier today. I agree completely, and it seems to fit here:

"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state; the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people."
