  • [ANNOUNCEMENT] Tactical Gamer Website Migration - 12JUL2014 1030Z

    Tomorrow morning, starting at approximately 1030Z (0630 EDT) the Tactical Gamer website will begin the move to its new home. I have this planned out in stages to minimize the impact to the community. There may be brief periods (15 minutes or less) where the site is in maintenance mode and you won't be able to do anything, but for the most part it shouldn't be very intrusive.

    I will post updates in this thread as the migration progresses.

    For those of you who like to speak geek;

    1) Shut down the site to do a final database dump, usually takes about 10 minutes with the site operational.
    2) Copy dump over to new database server and import. Yea!
    3) Reconfigure existing web server to point to new remote database server on public IP.
    4) Bring site back on-line.
    5) Run final rsync on web site between old and new hosts.
    6) Bring new web server online pointing to new database on private IP (vswitch).
    7) Change DNS entries for web site to point to new web server.
    8) Relax while the transition happens and users come in from both web servers to the new DB. Get coffee..
    9) When DNS settles and all traffic is to new IP, shut down old web server and shut down public network interface on new DB server.

    That's my plan!

    I love plans :P

    So If I did not read this and came back in a few weeks time, would I notice any different or need to change anything?

      Absolutely nothing at all. You wouldn't even notice.

          Steps 1-4 completed. Everything looks good so far.

          Site is a little slower, but I guess that is to be expected... Getting coffee a little earlier than planned.

            New site up and running. Looks like most traffic is already routing through new system.

            TeamSpeak integration currently disabled while I fix a couple issues with it...

              TeamSpeak integration re-enabled. Almost ALL traffic is on new system.

              The only latecomer to the DNS update party seems to be... lol.. Bing!

                  Hey Apophis... mostly seems to be working for me however:

                  * I get a "domain not found" when I don't prepend "www",
                  * I get a 404 when I use my bookmarked URL - www.tacticalgamer.com/armed-assault. It works fine if I go to http://www.tacticalgamer.com/forumdisplay.php?f=237.

                    I'm aware of the domain not found issue. I forgot to adjust the TTLs for the root domain, so it hasn't updated yet. It should kick in fairly soon.

                    As for the bookmarks. One part of the upgrade I didn't mention is I'm making some changes to the back-end SEO. Right now, the URLs are all raw so bookmarks will likely not work very well. I'm about to start bringing the SEO stuff back on-line, so they SHOULD mostly fix themselves shortly.

                        Keep em' coming! Don't stop. I was only aware of the domain issue. The forum redirects was important for me to remember and I'm making sure to tune them now to keep bookmarks working.

                        They should be (mostly) working now. Check your shortcut. :)

                          OK :D

                          http://www.tacticalgamer.com/armed-assault redirects to http://www.tacticalgamer.com/forum.php... expected? I cleared my browsing data for the last day just in case it was a 30* redirect issue.

                            Hmmm....

                            Well, it looks like I was able to get close, but not close enough. The new rewrites require the trailing / at the end of the forum name.

                            http://www.tacticalgamer.com/armed-assault - No good
                            http://www.tacticalgamer.com/armed-assault/ - Good

                              Both those link to the forum.php main page... I think the new link has "simulation" in it:

                              http://www.tacticalgamer.com/simulation/armed-assault or http://www.tacticalgamer.com/simulation/armed-assault/
