  • Tactical OS CPU Poll

Linux can be optimized for specific CPUs. I have, in my possession, an AMD-64 desktop with an Nvidia card, and a Celeron Laptop with an Radeon IGP card.

If you want to run Tactical OS, I need to know what hardware I am building for.

    Thanks!

I have one system with an A64 + ATI X850XT/PE and another with an Athlon 2600+ mobile and ATI 9700...

I'd like to give it a try. I also have lower end PCs at work I'm going to experiment with linux-based OSes

Only slightly OT: When you do an automake (i.e. GCC) build - what are the command line option for optimization for an AMD 64 (Venice core)?

Actually, you would change the default -march or -mcpu settings in the makefile.

Saw this over in Freshmeat, maybe it will help.

                    http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/730/

                    -march and -mcpu
With GCC 3, you can specify the type of processor you're using with -march or -mcpu. Although they seem the same, they're not, since one specifies the architecture, and other the CPU. The available options are:

                    i386
                    i486
                    i586
                    i686
                    Pentium
                    pentium-mmx
                    pentiumpro
                    pentium2
                    pentium3
                    pentium4
                    k6
                    k6-2
                    k6-3
                    athlon
                    athlon-tbird
                    athlon-4
                    athlon-xp
                    athlon-mp

-march implies -mcpu, so when you use -march, there's no need to use -mcpu.

-mcpu generates code tuned for the specified CPU, but it does not alter the ABI and the set of available instructions, so you can still run the resulting binary on other CPUs (it turns on flags like mmx/3dnow, etc.).

When you use -march, you generate code for the specified machine type, and the available instructions will be used, which means that you probably cannot run the binary on other machine types.
                    Hope that helps.

That's the whole purpose for creating TacticalOS, to run the games we play here on a linux system.

                          300 Gig SATA hard drive

Ahh yes, it's quite beautiful. And damn expensive.

However, my other box and the majority of my colleagues run somewhere around a 32-bit AMD 3000 system.

I'm guessing that there will be 32 and 64 bit builds for download, regardless of votes? (Well, seeing as there are already plenty of non 64-bit system votes at least.)
