Well, your computer has a bunch of spare cycles to burn, like when you're sleeping and such. This just happens to be one of the more popular causes to donate that free time to (at least for me).

i always wondered about these things, does it serve any reason to do this stuff, or is it just one of those games that people try to play to see who cand do more stuff with their computer. (sorry for the term, A "computer geek race"?)

SETI is the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence. Basically, its distributed computing where thousands upon thousands of users run a special screensaver that analyzes noise heard from space, picked up by the Aricebo dish.

We're hunting little green men. :)
Either that or your transmitting data from your computer to the CIA lol

I'm guessin they're using their computers to crunch some data for SETI. Imagine all the worlds computers connected by the internet working on the same sets of problems. The Internet is basically the worlds biggest supercomputer, if used correctly. I'm actually really suprised the government hasnt created 'worms' that force this activity on all the worlds computers =p I'm sure Bill Gates has thought about it =p
