  • Fortress Forever

When I was about 14 I started playing Team Fortress Classic. Those of you who remember TFC, probably know what I'm talking about. The goal of the game was simple. Capture the flag. The maps were sometimes simple and sometimes very complex at the same time. Sometimes there would just be two sides, and two flags. Others times there could be 4 flags and 4 bases, and any combination in between.

Classes like snipers, and engineers, equipped with upgradable turrets, and emp mines.

Soldiers with rocket launchers and nail grenades.

Pyromen with flame throwers and napalm.

    http://www.fortress-forever.com/?a=media&s=5

Spies who could change their clothes to look like the enemy.

    http://www.fortress-forever.com/?a=media&s=42

Sometimes, you would have to capture and hold an area of the map for so long, or capture so many areas in so much time, etc.

I can remember one map that I loved and hated at the same time. Hunted.

    http://www.fortress-forever.com/?a=media&s=15

The yellow team were snipers, the blue team was a civilian, and the red team were the civilian's escort. The civilian had to make it to the truck against a team of snipers equipped with automatic and scoped sniper rifles.

I think, honestly, that this is the perfect example of a teamplay oriented game, and reccomend it for review.

    Re: Fortress Forever

TFC was my first foray into online multiplayer gaming. Looking over the dev team, I've got to say that I'm pretty excited for this thing; there's a lot of names on that list that pretty well DEFINED Team Fortress Classic, and a few names from more current HL-related efforts.

Looking forward to this. Actually, the HL2 and HL mods (Move In is nice) are really starting to come around.

I was addicted to TFC back in the day of half-Life...and followed and couldn't wait for the much anticipated TF2 follow up, that never did... will watch this closely also.

You young whipper snappers and your TFC. I was playin' Team Fortress before it needed the "Classic" added on.

I've been following this mod for a while, hopefully it'll be ready soon. Now they need to make sure that medics and soldiers aren't overpowered.

How soon is it to being ready? I will review a beta, but not an alpha. It's not fair to the developers.

Can't wait. It looks purdy, hopefully it is as fun as the original.

Will there still be bunny hopping (I'm guessing not), conc jumping, rocket jumping?!??

I loved Quake World Team Fortress. Grenade-hop grapling-hook jump rocket-head-shot.

Yeah it was all fun and games untill the source code hit the 'net.

                      Re: Fortress Forever

Been waiting on this one :D. TFC was basically the first online game I really got into for a long time and it helped shape the way I play all FPS games. So many fun classes I played: Soldier, Sniper, Medic, Spy, Engineer, and Pyro, (underrated.) And there's a sort of strategy on the assault and defend maps, ie. dustbowl and avanti. Back when I played, before I found TG, I even thought of tactical ways to defend and attack, plus you always have to keep an eye on the enemies classes in case of a medic infection. :) Hopefully this'll get some TG support for a server when it comes out since I've never played it in that style.

Ok, since everyone has such fond memories of TFC, how 'bout a server?

                          Re: Fortress Forever

I guess I grabbed a bit more attention that I was hoping for. Nice replies, guys, didn't know so many people were interested. I'd love for there to be a server, but can we support one? Seems like we can almost lose a few servers. I know we ALL love to play Red Orchestra ALL of the TIME now because everytime I check the server, it's empty. 24.99$ down the drain.

So, maybe we could dump a server and get a FF server going when it comes out.

Not sure on a release date yet, had been looking around but didn't find anything. Keep the feedback coming, I like where it's going.

TFC was also my first FPS. As far as conc jumping and rocket jumping goes, they're sure to still be in the game. The game was popular for a LONG time, and still is populated today, and they've never taken conc jumping out, and I haven't even seen a server that's modded so that it can't be used. I think, honestly, that conc jumping and rocket jumping are an ability given to players, rather than just a part/exploit of the game since it's been around so long.

For those who don't understand, a conc grenade, or concussion grenade, would stun the enemy and daze any allies in the area of it's explosion, and knock them back. The grenades are used by medics and scouts. The two classes would toss the grenade, walk over it and jump at the right time and be shot across the map with minimal loss of judgement. I think if they change anything about conc jumping it should be the effects it gives the player using the grenade.

It's an awesome way to travel with flags, but it can be stopped by snipers with ease. Snipers are the games number one defense against conc jumpers, as the delay time they receive in the air is well long enough for the snipers to aim their shots correctly.

One thing I would like to see the snipers have is more of a laser rather than a big red dot. The red dot was cool, but it should be A LOT smaller.

Another topic for discussion are HW guys. We all hate'm till we play'm, then we love'm till they're dead. Any changes you guys would like to see? Maybe a new set of grenades for each class rather than mutiple like grenades on different classes.

Give me your feedback, or I curse ye' with my nade launcher.

                              Re: Fortress Forever

I played Team Fortress for the Quake 3 engine back in the day as much as I play BF2 these days. That was my first multi-class, multiplayer FPS. Those CTF maps were great because that really started to focus the deathmatchy action on objectives. The whole concept of 'flag defense' was brand new to me in FPSs then. I played TF and Urban Combat right up until BF1942 came out. Good times. It'll be cool to give this a go again when it's ready for release. :)
