  • Trojan virus installs anti-virus scanner!

    http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2034680,00.asp

This particular trojan installs an anti-virus scanner and malware remover that tries to eliminate other malware in order to maximize system resources for its own spam.

My question is why haven't some "white hat" hackers come up with a trojan that does the same thing, but without the negative payload? Why don't we have lots of good trojans spreading to combat the bad ones?

My borther in law had one like that (although not as complex, from what I saw anyway) install itself on his laptop. It was quite nasty, hijacked his desktop, taskbar, and ran the virus scan by itself. Was a pain in the butt to remove also.

Was actually more annoying then your typical virus :D.

    I love gaming, mmmmmmmm

In the far future, cybernetic nano-viruses will hijack your nervous system. In addition to forcing you to send all your money to the hacker, they will cook you delicious pies to keep you alive so you can continue to earn money for the hacker. The only way to be free is if your co-workers notice the aroma of pie emanating from you, or the fact that you stop talking to them.

Give them time... they will. And as far as the good ones, I'm sure that is a work in progress too.

Probably for the same reason you can't break into someone's house when you noticed they didn't set the alarm before they left: it's illegal.

This is not the first instance of this. Some guy wrote a virus that did nothing but inform people about a vulnerability Windows XP had. I do not have the story off-hand.

There have been viruses written with supposed "good" goals (removal of other specific virus infections). They aren't good.

I believe in some *NIX environments security loopholes have been used to repair themselves (And also propogate to other machines to do the same) for some time.

But more than likely these fixes were administered by the IT staff, not some "do-gooder" sending out spam e-mail with attached "checkoutmypic.exe." If someone not authorized to do these updates was caught, they would be prosecuted.

Right, but I still can't believe that there's not some vigilante hacker out there looking to make a name for himself. I doubt that he'd be prosecuted if he was as careful as most virus writers. Investigators simply wouldn't put finding him as a priority...

Question, where do these people go to catch all these viruses?
I read E-mails. Ive been on parts of the net that would scare pretty much anyone I know, but, i have yet to pick up a virus/Trojan/worm that I couldn't remove within a few clicks or a reboot and quick thinking.

I think they're searching for strange and obscure internet porn.

It WOULD be nice to see less hackers period. Sure, keep the ones who hack programs for the simple task of learning, but screw the ones who hack INTO other peoples crap. That really pisses me off. As an artist, It makes me pissed to see an artists website hacked for no real reason at all. They aren't some evil conglomerate monolith , they're just some guy trying to make a buck selling prints through pay pall, leave them the heck alone.

Re: Trojan virus installs anti-virus scanner!

I think usually they get a spam email or something and they somehow open the attachment because they're either stupid or uninformed (or both). Bada bing, virus.

Then there's all those Windows and IE security holes that nobody patches; I've never gotten a virus through that but I'm sure it can happen. I mean, that's what the holes are.
