  • Who the hell was that guy?

I've been online for quite a few years now. I discovered forums and chat rooms in Jr High, and I've been involved with many communities since. The ones that are still around and keep an archive of all the topics and posts are literally like a time capsule and give me a glimpse of the person I was back in the day.

I did a search through a few of those communities today, I couldn't tell you why. What I discovered really shocked me. I couldn't even recognize that person posting under my handle. I'd like to think that I've matured, greatly, since those early days. I'm even a bit embarrassed by the crap I've posted.

When was the last time you've looked at your posting past?

Man, I was so immature and retarded when I was younger.

Thankfully, I'm passed all of that now and have come to my mature senses and taken on the persona of a large rodent.

Re: Who the hell was that guy?

My first post in a thread ever was on Tacticalgamer.com in December 2006. I would say if anything my posts have gotten dumber since then. I can't wait to see how bad they are in a few more months :)

I was never involved in forums up until the release of Jedi-Outcast, when I joined Jedi-Outcast.com (so, maybe only around 5 years have I been posting online). The forum is gone now so I can't search back through it anymore.

But, even now I can notice a massive difference in my views and the way I debate here at TacticalGamer. I started here years ago as a Libertarian with strong Conservative views. Now I'm pretty much a Libertarian with strong liberal views. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but there's a slow and noticeable change in the way I post.

I look back on some old posts and cringe and the language I used and the inconsistent manner in which I made my point. I still do the same thing every once in a while, but it's rarer.

Still, having a written medium that's basically a window into your mind at the time is an awesome tool to have at your disposal.

My first posts are lost to the world, I imagine, as they were on an old crappy box running WW3 in my high school's computer lab.

From what I recall of the posts (and others like them on various other BBSes back in the day) however, I believe that I have continued my current reign of awesomeness from time immemorial through the present day without pause or stutter.

I am quite positive that wasn't my first thread. I'd be mostly surprised if it were my first created thread since the rebranding of N42 to TG, but I know I had to have something prior to that; I've been poking around N42/TG since... 2002?

Pokerface has posts older than this on TG. They just happen to be sitting in the Forum Archives and inaccessible to everyone but Asch and myself. This may not even be the earliest thread, just the earliest thread since a years-old upgrade to our architecture.

                  The thread had something to do with playing in leagues;

Sad isn't it? :icon_lol: That's what happens when A) work forces a 2-3 minute "break" every 10 minutes or so (TG is better than thumb-twiddling while my code compiles)... and B) you don't have anyone looking over your shoulder at work

Re: Who the hell was that guy?

I discovered the internet back in 4th grade through the wonders of AOL 1.0. Back then it was $2.95 an hour on a 4800bps modem. Me and my buddies used to huddle around the computer and go into chat rooms and try to pick up high school girls. Then again, thats about all there was to AOL 1.0...chat rooms and a couple bulletin boards where people mostly posted porn. Amazing how little the internet has changed. Almost 20 years later and its still mostly porn.

Go back a few year more and you would have been dialing up to services like that (CompuServe, GEnie, etc) through an x.25 PAD at 300 bps and paying $2.95 a MINUTE! It was brutal.

It's pretty bad when you realize that the Internet is where it is today because of AOL and porn.

                              EDIT: fixed the wording.
