If you went COD4 I think you'd be running on pretty low graphics settings. You'd probably run ArmA ok from what I understand.

However, if you liked BF2 and want to get more out of it join us on the Project Reality server sometime. It is a lot more tactical and teamplay oriented than vanilla bf2.

Well if your current rig can't handle BF2 the way you like don't bother with Arma. Arma is like a torture test for your rig. Even really high end rigs can struggle at times with Arma depending on the settings. Not to say your computer can't run it but be preppared to turn down the resolution and settings to get some smooth play.

I can run COD4 at 1680x1050 with 2xAA and most in game settings at high fine, Arma I have to run at lower resolution to enable 2xAA and a mix of medium/high settings. Arma is a beatiful game but not optimized.

You'll need Project Reality version .613 The download is here... http://www.realitymod.com/filelinks.html

Make sure you get the CLIENT(FULL) 1860MB, not the patch. See you on the server!

I have a 8800GTS video card and I run it on medium settings because some of the maps are huge! You could probably run on custom low/medium settings. The only important setting is view distance 100%!

              PR:
              1. uses a game mode called Assault and Secure (AAS) which allows teams to capture only 1-2 specific flags (rather than any flag in vanilla bf2 and POE2). Once you capture a flag you then can capture the next flag(s) pushing the enemy back towards there main base. This means a more focussed attack/defend gameplay.
              2. Respawn - you can usually only spawn at your main base and maybe another flag. There 3 are mobile spawns available (a) squad-specific Rally Point, APCs or Support Trucks, and your squad leader. This encourages squads to stick together (to set rally points and protect SL) as the maps in PR can be very large and you don't want to have to walk/drive for several minutes just to get back to where you died...
              3. Limited numbers of specialised kits can be requested from some spawn points e.g. Heavy AT, sniper (usually only 1-2 per team) etc.\
              4. The insurgency mode is yet another gamemode which involved hunting out weapon caches while the insurgents try and drive the British away from there precious caches... great fun!
              5. Steep learning curve, because the game is quite different from vBF2 it can be frustrating at first until you get the hang of things. Reading the manual before you play is a MUST, just to know how to get kits etc.

              POE2:
I've only played about 10 hours of POE2, but to me it is more like vanilla BF2 in gameplay, but with new maps, vehicles and weapons. The focus is on USA vs Russia. I probably can't do the mod justice with the limited amount of play I have on it so won't say anything more.

Differences: PR slower-paced than POE2 (a good thing for tactical play), PR more intricate rules than POE2 (good and bad), PR focussed more on realism, POE2 focussed more on fun gameplay.

The best thing is that both are free so you can just give them a try and see how you like each.

Actually, its the other way around. I have a Pentium D, 7600GS, 1 gig of RAM and I run CoD 4 at high settings, without any problems. Armed Assault, however, is a real pain for any system. Its so horribly optimised that even the highest end systems can barely run it with all the fancy effects.
Gameplay wise, I would recommend Armed Assault. CoD 4 was a real disappointment for me, really. And theres a huge mod community for ArmA too, there are realism mods, RPG mods like Sahrani Life (I've been playing that alot this week - great fun) and lots of other stuff.

Re: Armed Assault Or Call Of Duty?

COD4 is AMAZING. It's not a big "battlefield" per se, a little more intimate, but the graphics, sound, maps, amazing... ArmA is also amazing, the graphics are pretty good, but you want a battlefield? How about 10? Very sim-oriented. It doesn't get a constant amount of traffic but it's definately a good game if you like that kind of thing to have for those times it's going on.

Well arma can be small missions, like smaller coop games. There are LARGE games, like evolution, where you play on a huge island with like 8 cities, all hot zones that need liberation. Depending on your settings, you don't get bubbled in some small fog of war map, you can literally see klicks away, and shooting "long range" shots takes on new meaning. Really cool when your drawdistance is set for 10 km and flying around in a jet or rotorary.

Re: Armed Assault Or Call Of Duty?

If you're interested in MilSim and perhaps creating your own tactical mods then Arma is the way to go.

COD4, while technically the best game of the year.. is still a game. Arma isnt really a game at all, it's a consumer port of a tactical combat simulator (used by the military even). Its true design is to emplace people in different Scenarios and see how they respond.

From your system specs though I'd go COD4, as Arma (like others have said) is not optimized very well... so if you're looking for graphics you'll lose out.

Unless you like crashing helicopters like Hardca$h. No vehicles in COD4. Two totally different games. BF2 is like something in between and they are on the extremes. Depends if you want something more quick and intimate like COD4 or more vast in environment size as well as # of players. I've never played on another ArmA server other than TG, so I don't know what kind of players you will run into, our server doesn't get packed and it's more often a weekend gig for most.
