  • Darwin on the loose

Most of the people that have been around for a while know that I like to build things. A few years ago I took up building small robots. I have little machines that wander all over the place and don't do much of anything useful.

I recently decided to enter a small robotics competition. The idea was to build a robot that evoked some kind of emotion in people watching. I have never in my life tried to work on something like this so I obviously thought I had to enter the competition. I somehow ended up winning.

I would like to introduce you to Darwin. Named because when I started I didn't have a particular design in mind. I just grabbed crap from under my workbench and started putting it together.

He has an IR sensor embedded in his head and will avoid obstacles. He will also occasionally stop and look around for a clear path.

Here is a better video showing the head scanning motion:

Step on it before it gets bigger! Omg!

Cool. I've always wanted to do something like that.

I'm not sure about battery life. I have never run tehn all the way down. I'm using 2300mA NIMH batteries. I'm guessing the whole system pulls a couple of amps with the drive motors loaded. That should give me a little over an hour worth of battery but that is all a guess. I haven't measured the current draw of the system.

                          Pretty cool wimp,

You should make a movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" - I know they already have this ready for release, but with all your robots, you might be able to take over tennesse.
