It's linked to your Steam account. I don't think they'll allow you to switch it to another account.

The HL2 key, from what I've read, is a hash that is not stored locally.
It's bound to your account and stored in encrypted form on their server(s).

Are you wanting to associate the key with another account? If so it aint happenin.
If you're talking about a second key, you can create an additional account.

Whadja do, get banned? Just curious...

i have 2 cd keys and the one i'm using right now i accidentally returned it to the store(as soon as i left the store i'm like: OHH SHOOT! i'm using that cd key) if someone gets that retail box and uses that cd key, it won't work, if that guy reports to steam, i could get banned or something bad might happen.

Wow. That's bad. However, I think you can go to "Borwse Games" and click on "Register a product I already own..." and register the CD key you have. Or, just get a new e-mail address and tie it to a new account.

I wonder what'll happen to the HL2 copy you returned and registered.... Did Steam think of that? Maybe when that guy finds it and they pinpoint you you'll just be asked to hand over the account and no one gets hurt or something.

It'll be stupid of the store to resell it or even take the game back since they can't really resell the game. The store can't know if the CD key has been registered or not. In any case, you should be ok because the other person won't be able to register the key. I expect the other buyer would find that the key has been registered and will probably have to exchange the game. Hopefully, you don't have any other games linked to that Steam account. You never know what might happen.

right now, only half life 2 and cs source...until the ns team get ns over hl2, i'll be stuck with hl2 single player and cs source...how's that?

what would you guys suggest? i mean, i can "use" another email address but i kinda like my hotmail one since i've been using it for a very long time.

A store actually let you return HL2? They must be really out to lunch.

well, they said that it "looks" unopened (which you are right because it was opened but i took off the seal stickers cuz i thought i was gonna keep it) so they took it and of all places, it was best buy.......so.......................what's your guy's suggestion?

If you don't have any other games on the Steam account, don't add any games to it just in case.

how many cd keys can ONE account have?

because i'm going for hairynevus's idea that i should just go to "Register a product I already own..." and type in a new cd-key or at least the one i want.

I would use another account just in case something bad happens and your current account gets banned.

First you should try e-mailing customer support, explaining the situation to them and seeing if they can change it for you. If that doesn't work, I guess you'll have to start a new account with that cd key.

the best advice in this case is honesty. if you fess up before there is a problem reported, they are more likely to work with you. I am sure that Valve can make that Product ID valid again for registration, If you tell them that you made and honest mistake, give them a valid ID, and tell them your old one, they should be able to make the correction without further recourse. they aren't tyrrants.
