  • Your printer spys on you!

    http://www.instructables.com/id/Yell...er_Spying_on_/

Apparently printers use a secret code to provide their serial # and other assorted information on each page they print. A very sneaky way to trace back the origins of a document... check it out

Yeah, so? If I'm making and distributing propaganda, or printing personal documents, chances are that I dont care if anyone knows that I printed it. Usually these kinds of things are used for criminal cases, so if some guy says "I didnt print the fake accounting records" the cops can say "oh yeah? well the supar doopar sekret printer code says that it came from your printer".

I ran across this stuff in '05 or '06 when I was researching steganographic techniques.

Looks like EFF is making recent effort to publicize it..

So if you were a smart criminal, you'd just print everything out on a monochrome laser printer, right?

It's original purpose, if I remember correctly, was to identify the source of counterfeit documents - which usually have color involved.

So sure.. I guess.. if what you are doing doesn't require color. :)

However, I was considering dusting off my old daisy-wheel printer and putting her back in service. Now to find an old school printer port and vista drivers on my laptop. Still looking...

Yeah I've seen these first hand. A coworker of mine showed the dots to me a few months back. The printer had some color issues so she had printed off several pages of various colors to use to do color match. On some of the color fields you could see the dots with the naked eye.

I wouldn't worry about it myself, but still something interesting.

Where's the warning label on the printer? Shouldn't the consumer be informed?
                      Something like:
You cannot print documents anonomously with this device. A built in survelience mechinism will mark each page printed with encrypted information detailing the printer specs, serial #, and date of print.
It's a shady practice with implications in todays world of ever receeding privacy.
