  • Well Written Television Shows of the last 30 years

I figured this topic was better suited for the general discussion area, since we don't need to throw personal opinions of religion, fire arms possesion, coming out parties of the rest of 2008 and new ones of 2009.

So as a almost 30 year old I have found myself watching old re-runs of The West Wing and Law and Order and wanted my fellow TG'ers opinion of well written T.V. Shows of the last 30 years, remember lets keep this civil this isn't the sandbox. I will Start.

I noted in my earlier paragraph that I have been watching re-run's of the West Wing, and there is no coincidence between that and the election just finishing up, the DVD's are of season's 1-4 and its just one of the few DVD's that my brother hasn't remembered to take to his apartment with his new bride.

I love it, I think Aaron Sorkin really outdid himself, the writing is crips and fast and the characters are rich in color and robust with energy. Yes it is a political drama, but it really marked a transformation of film actors making the transition to television. Plus its great to see Bradley Whitford who played a great frat a-hole in Revenge of the Nerds II, and villain fame of Billy Madison as the Asisstant to the WH CoS.

NYPD Blue for the first few seasons was a first of its kind in regards to Cop Drama, and David Caruso is still probably kicking himself in the head for leaving the show. But then again Steven Bocho is a king in regards to these types of shows, and the writing style almost kept up to the pace of a hectic lifestyle in NYC.

Shows with the best writing have come out very recently.

Dexter is the best written show I have seen in a long time.

Other shows which are very well written:
        -The Shield
        -Lost
        -Deadwood

For me it was/am: 24, Cold Case, Stargate SG-1, The Unit, Threshold, MacGyver, Knight Rider, and Hawaii Five-O.

I found 24 and The Unit the most intriguing of the bunch. 24 manages to keep it's thriller feeling even after six seasons and a viewer often is left with a whole bunch of questions which he/she might not figure out until the answers are presented in a later episode. The Unit, a great glimpse into the life of a soldier with a family. I think the rest speaks for itself.

                The Shield FTW!

For second place, Sons of Anarchy has been pretty awesome so far.

I'd have to say Battlestar Galactica is one of my favorite shows, except for the damn year-long wait between seasons...

Other than that The Simpsons, House, Star Trek TNG, X-files, Law and Order, and Stargate SG-1

                  Yes I'm a nerd :).

I didn't join a squad once and this guy named Nardini took me into the back room and beat me with a sock of oranges.

I will definitely check that out, i was pretty disappointed with the short-lived show sorkin put out with whitford and matthew perry, it had all the stuff of the west wing, but it didn't fit into a "snl" type show which was the background premise.

*Band of Brothers is an excellent piece of writing however it was a mini-series, though there will be another Band of Brothers type story coming out in the spring on HBO.
