  • Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili dies

The death of a luge competitor who left the track at high speed has cast a shadow over the Winter Olympics in Canada ahead of the opening ceremony.

Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili's sled flipped and he smashed into a steel pole at the Whistler Sliding Centre, killing the 21-year-old.

The accident happened just hours before the ceremony to open the 21st Winter Games in Vancouver.

Sad day, although I do think it is a bit of a glaring safety issue having those beams exposed like that.

Better but more graphic view of the crash. Clickers beware!

If I were in the luge event, I would be freaked.

Ye, its a tragedy, but, for people to be screaming that the luge event be cancelled are nuts. Here we go again, living by the lowest common denominator.

The Luge shouldn't be cancelled, people calling for that are fools. If we cancel the Luge because of it's dangers then by all rights half of the other sports should be closed also. The Luge is a dangerous sport but this accident could have been easily prevented by better course design and more thoughtful safety measures.

They've put barriers around the exposed metal posts to soften an impact with them, and they've shortened the men's track to be the same as the women's to reduce speeds. Seems a bit odd that the posts were exposed in the first place though.

I think that an impact at 88mph would seriously injure, possibly still kill, no matter what barriers they put up to 'soften an impact with them'. It's good they decided to slow them down until they can fix this obvious design flaw.
