  • Lateral Thinking Puzzle #5 - Ink Stain [solved]

    INTRODUCTION
Lateral Thinking Puzzles, unlike most puzzles, are inexact. In a sense, they are a hybrid between puzzles and storytelling. In each puzzle, some clues to a scenario are given, but the clues do not tell the full story. Your job is to fill in the details and complete the story. There could be more than one solution to any given puzzle, but generally only one explanation is truly satisfying.

    RULES
You fill in the details to complete the story by asking "Yes / No" questions about the story. My response to your "Yes and No" questions will be one of the following: yes, no, or irrelevant. Sometimes the response may be "simplify your question", if your question is too complicated to answer with a single yes or no.

You will be tempted to use google. DO NOT. It will be unsatisfying for you and everyone else. Hints may be provided by me, if everyone seems to have hit a roadblock. Good luck and have fun!

Warning: For some reason, these puzzles have a tendency to be rather morbid.

    The Puzzle

Her coat was now ruined; an ugly, blue splatter permanently staining most of the back. It was her only coat, and although it was a particularly frigid winter, she never had a greater cause for celebration. A life very well might have been saved.

    Hints

    Solution
She was a baby seal whose coat had just been sprayed with blue stain by a Greenpeace helicopter. The ugly blue stain would prevent fur merchants from slaughtering her for her beautiful coat.

Did it have something to do with the theft-prevention systems some shops use (if the tagged item goes outside of the building, it bursts and sprays ink over the clothes, ruining them)?

      Thanks Westy!

She is homeless and is wearing a coat ruined by the security ink system. Whether she found it after a thief or the store threw it out isn't really important.

Is the blue splatter the result of a life being saved (as opposed to being the cause)?

          A: No

            A: No

If not, then is she a bear?
            A: No

            Was the life saved hers?
            A: Yes

              Is she an animal?
              A: Yes

              Is the splatter paint?
A: Irrelevant (don't know exact chemical makeup of the staning agent)

Is the splatter involved directly with her life being saved?
              A: Yes

I find it hard to guess what animal has the capacity to know that something has saved it and 'her only coat' is strange to say about an animal, as if animals had more than one.

Is it an animal raised or hunted for it's fur?
                A: Yes

It is a story, after all; the story doesn't have to be based entirely in reality.

I was headed towards the hunted animal idea with my questions...

She had cause for celebration. She didn't actually throw a party ;)

Who's gonna provide the coup de gras?

They do tag them with colors to identify the owner. The wool could be used to make a coat for someone.

The reason it says she had only one coat is a clue. If it wasn't mentioned, we might have thought she could have thrown that coat away.

Did she cause the stain herself?

She is some sort of animal who is usually hunted for their pelt.

Her coat now stained, it is worthless and she won't be hunted anymore. Her life is saved.
