  • Why do so many gamers in the FPS community think hacking is fun?

I have never hacked before, and I don't intend to, even though I feel tempted due to my inferior FPS skills. But I am seeing SO many people resorting to hacking now. While playing Combat Arms, I see a hacker in nearly every room, sometimes MORE THAN ONE.

The hack that pisses me off the most is one that crashes the server on command. I saw a player getting vote kicked because he used it, and every time that vote was initiated, he crashed the server, and everyone ended in the lobby. He was SO arrogant, and wanted everything to either go his way, or everyone suffers and is forced to leave.

Sometimes, people don't even bother kicking the hacker(s), and laugh at how the opposing team is getting wiped out so unfairly. And some companies are REALLY unreliable in stopping these hacks, with Nexon being a great example. I see people advertise VIP hacks, selling and bragging about how they've made money in such an immoral way(although THEY wouldn't call it immoral).

It has gotten to the point where the FPS community seems to have degraded so much, that hacking has gotten enjoyable...I just can't see why, even though it's nothing new at all. It leads to suspension, permanent bans, it ruins the game, and causes so much paranoia among people that by the time I see a LEGIT player getting scores a hacker would obtain, they get kicked out!

Why do so many people think it's fun to use such a stupid thing? Oh, and bonus question for all who have time, and feel interested...Why do some companies (such as Nexon) have such a hard time stopping hacks, when all they can do is just go on google and shut down as many sites as possible? It shouldn't be too hard to find popular hacking sites and sue them for breaking their ToS, not to mention gaining profit for doing so.

My theory: Most people that hack are kids. I'm talking 16 and under. This is because they have way more time on their hands than people with jobs and families to take care of and they get really bored. Free games attract kids like crazy because they don't have any money of their own and have to beg their parents to buy them games. The same holds true for mods. I can't stand playing most Source mods mainly because the majority of people playing it are immature, screaming, spamming, racist children.

I could probably expand on this and try to answer your other questions but I'm tired, I'm a horrible writer, and I'd probably end up sounding stupid.

Deferred gratification -- the more a game is focused on instant gratification, the worse of an audience it attracts. Compare the speed of action in EVE, or PR to that of CA and WoW. Faster action = faster gratification = popularity = crap audience. Is it possible to have a game be popular and have deferred gratification ingrained into it? I certainly don't think so.

A tangent that might be relevant -- a similar question can be asked about a community of people. See what Paul Graham has to say about that: http://www.paulgraham.com/hackernews.html

Honestly, some of the people hack because it lets them have more power over people, or let them "troll the gameworld" in a sense. They do it just to piss you off and see how effective your clan/etc is at getting rid of them, then post videos of them hacking your server and hearing the people complain/etc and how fast they get banned.

For these people, they're just hacking to be an *******, because there's no real penalties for being an ******* online, usually. And for the larger clans of these people (name redacted as they like to google for themselves) VAC/user key banning doesn't matter to them at all, as they have hundreds of compromised accounts through keylogging or stolen info, so they're right back in the game. Or they take the "DDOS the server" approach to empty it of players after being banned as retribution and to read the forums afterwards.

As for your last point, it depends on the company. Some companies (for example, Joymax, who runs Silk Road Online) can actually make a profit by people hacking, and the conspiracy theories abound in that kind of arena. The theory basically is, since the vast majority of players are actually people running clientless bots, and there is a finite amount of slots on MMO server, the server becomes flooded with bots.

This means that normal legit free users can't log in. However, if you just pilot down to thier cash shop, for 15 dollars, you get a 30 day "Silver pass" that ensures you a spot on the server. Thus, by maintaining users who pilot 100-200 bots each on their boxes, instead of clearing out the TONS of obvious bots (50 people, all named random characters, traveling in straight triangular lines toward monster's routes? gee i wonder..) that they claim to do, tey can ensure a steady stream of revenue from one of their highest-priced items in the cash shop. They organize occaisional purges, but it's not nearly enough, and most of the people who do it are right back in the game days later.

DICE needs to make a comical boxing glove attached to a spring punch the player in the face 40% of the time they get into a helicopter or jet.

only time i've "cheated" was in gta iv multiplayer (only in freeride no rank) using car and object spawners. faster vehicles etc. and alo invincibility... gta iv multiplayer is a sh***y arcade environment, and there's nothing better when some idiot bent on killing you because he doesn't know what else to do, and seeing him realize that he can't kill you, then just stare at him while he throws everything he got a you (and you can almost hear him crying) then just walk away nonchalant.

Some of this was also brought on by the gaming companies themselves by embedding things like god mode, infinate weapons, unlimited ammo, etc. into the games. "Buy Game X on the first day at Best Buy and get the XXXX mode unlock". That pretty much tells the players that it's OK to cheat.

And frankly I think that many of the gaming companies like all of the angst surrounding cheats as it creates publicity - and as they no, even bad publicity is good publicity.

I really don't think that attitude is appropriate given the nature of this community. Would you perhaps care to explain in a mature fashion why you are of this opinion?

Don't forget about trolling people who shamelessly advertise on xbox live about doing 10th prestige lobbies. These guys will try to rob you blind, but they will also try other things.

I remember one time me and some of my buddies were fighting with this idiot of a teen in MW2, the guy is being smacked down and trash talked by 4 or 5 of us... It was straight hate. He threatened us, so he modded the care packages to always be ammo, but we can always use ammo. After some more hate, he decided that he wanted more abuse from us. He decided to mod the voip used over xbox, so he joined in on our team's radio channel, so we got to talk to this idiot who was living on the other team.

The problem begins with the nature of the internet where everybody is faceless and anonymous. Creating a new identity is as simple as creating a new username account. There is no accountability for your actions and basically little to no repercussions for acting like a jerk. You can't behave this way in the real world without suffering consequences because there are laws, etiquette and there are real, tangible faces to associate stupid actions with. But then people go on the internet, the forums, online games, and they cheat, mistreat other people and act like buffoons because they can get away with what they cannot in the real world. It is essentially a giant playground that can bring out the worst in some people.

It is stuff like that, that had made me give up on MP games online. People acting stupid and not giving a damn. When I had joined TG, I had actually come off of an almost 2 year boycott to online MP games. And its because of what is correctly illustrated above my post.

+1 GoreZiad. That sums it up quite nice.

To sum it up... Cause they suck!

I see it all the time in MW2 ...
People with hacks SUCK. And I don't mean their attitude. I mean that they suck at the game.
Hacked ranks and a k/d of 8/17 xD
                              Wallhack and 12/19 ...

I mean come on... If I'd use wallhacks my k/d would be over the top! (Well... more than it already is x])
Maybe there are two groups of cheaters. The sad little jerks who are just too stupid/impatient to play the game a while and actually get some SKILL!
And of course the 'Rectalus vulgaris' ... Usually in the range of 12-22 years old, bored, suffering from low self-esteem and lack of awesome. Inable to rock in the real world so they cheat their way into attention and to actually get a chance to... I don't know... show the world their balls? Well... I don't know...
I don't cheat. Not even in single player. If I'm too stupid to win or to get an achievement... I try till I make it or quit.
But neither seems to be an option for 'Rectalus vulgaris'.
