  • recovering a raid0 setup

    Asus A8V, with promise raid

    i was setting the pc up in its new location and i turned it on.. she started to start up fine. However half way through loading WindowsXP ONE OF THE HARDDRIVE PLUGS FELL OUT (thank you enermax for your loose connectors)

    now the raid shows as "offline" and the promise bios cant rebuild it. Will i have ANY luck getting this working? any sort of "third party" programs that might be able to rebuild? the data is most likely fine as nothing would have been deleted for sure by a "simple" power failure?

    its NTFS, its 2x 80gig WD's i have about 70gig of data on it, about 30gig being important... :(

    You can try and call ASUS. They're tech support is pretty good.

    But, I'd say with 95% certainty: you're boned. Sorry man.

      someone has said to recreate the raid, but NOT to format it
      then use something like final data/File Scavenger 3.0 to recover files. Will try it in a few days :s

        my drive i was going to copy data too, has failed......160gig down the drain. thankfully that was backed up....

          did u ever get that up and running?

          I got a similar system and was wondering what it took to fix that.

            i had my 160gig harddrive give up on me so i have no means on getting the Possibly recoverable data off of my raid0 as of yet. The only drive i CAN install on my old system with the raid is only 20gig, but thats useless if i need to get 70gig of data off of it :)

            Sorry but i will have to update you later when Maxtor gets the replacement to me. then i will set the system up and get it ready for a hopeful recovery of most my data :(

            probably wishful thinking though.

              By virtue of my profession, I've had a lot of experience with RAID and I'm afraid the recent proliferation of RAID controllers on PC motherboards has led some users to make choices that might be less safe than they realize.

              I strongly recommend avoiding RAID0 (which isn't really RAID since it's not redundant). Basically, you're exponentially increasing the chance of losing your data because if any drive in the array fails, you lose the whole works. Furthermore, recovering data from a failed array drive is much trickier than recovering it from a single standalone drive.

              RAID1 and RAID5 can both be effective for home users, but RAID0 is risky...please use it only for non-critical data or for data that's regularly backed up.

                totaly agree on that.

                i might set up a mirror now lol......however that still brings up a problem. Raid setups dont like moving around onto different controlers, and with onboard controlers what the hell can you do when the MB fails? well buy another of the same model, but that sucks!
