  • need some help for a buddy on a BF3 rig

Ok, Buddy of mine wants to get into PC gaming. He has a case, and HD.....but I need a budget minded setup that will play BF3 on medium as a bare minimum. It will be an AMD3+ based rig so I am looking for input on:

    MOBO

    Memory (8 gigs)

Vid Card (I'm thinking 6850 or 6870 to save cash)

    CPU(quad core minimum....thinking I need around 3.3 to 3.6 ghz)

    Powersupply

heres what I was thinking feel free to suggest anything because I need it as cheap as possible.

If he can spare the extra $20, I'd pick up an FX-6100 (Six Core 3.3GHz) instead of that Four Core Phenom II.

Also I'm apprehensive about that memory as it's a brand I've never heard of, but it's probably just me. I'd pick up a set of these. It's half as much memory but 4GB will handle BF3 just fine, and he can buy another set or an 8Gb set when he feels it's time to upgrade as he'll still have two slots open on his motherboard.

Power supply, I'm not sure about. My first impression is 600W-650W should work fine.

Good call on the memory. As far as cpu i understand the other cpu is better . . . . But is it needed? This build unfortunately comes down to $$$$ and unless the cpu i have is not enough than i cant justify the additional money.

you are saving the 15 bucks on the ram.... justifying the extra 20 (before the 10$ gift card) for the cpu.

anywhere you can see I have overkill. I was trying to get under $480.00 Again money is the priority.

Re: need some help for a buddy on a BF3 rig

You can save a little money on the GPU actually. That HD6870 would be ideal, but you can run low-medium settings on a lower card. Say an HD6770 or a GTX550 Ti. As far as I'm concerned image quality should always take the backseat, worry about framerate and performance first.

            Here's an EVGA GTX550 Ti - $140

            And here's an XFX HD6770 - $110

If your going AMD, don't get the FX-6100. Go get an older phenom 960, 1100T or even the 555 BE. You can unlock the 555 into a quad and get the 212 heat sink and OC it on air to a decent 3.6 - 3.8. The newer 6100 albeit cheaper perform lower than there older counter part.

                Power supply is overkill.

consider this instead, still more than needed(450-500 would be plenty)

I'm sure you could save $20+ on the motherboard too if needed.

Re: need some help for a buddy on a BF3 rig

the biggest thing with the motherboard is that it makes or breaks the system. I think the video card is the only real place to save some $$$ and not cripple the system not or in the future.

I just picked that exact one up and it is pretty decent. after the mail in rebate, you would have saved 60 bucks to be under budget.. and with that mobo, you can always pick up a second one later to get sli... giving you a bump in performance without spending a ton of $$$ they should be sub 80 bucks by fall.

so the power supply and video card swap could get you in around 425 after rebates.

Revised....see what ya think. I kept the power supply only because down the road it allows him to add another card. Changed out CPU as well

I also failed to mention he will be gaming on a 19"lcd with a res of 1440X900

Whats the thoughts on the 6790 series? I never used or have heard much about them?

                    Price is at $472.00

Re: need some help for a buddy on a BF3 rig

He could run 2 video cards off a 550 watt easy.

I've measured ~5gigs of memory usage while playing BF3, no comparison to only having 4 as far as a noticeable performance difference.

6790 is a lower binned 6870/6850. High power utilization for better price/performance is usually the trade off with those types of cards.

your price is before rebates... btw. I added it up to just under 440.00.

and the setup looks like a great gamer - budget or otherwise.

Mind if I ask why it has to be an AMD system. You can build Intel systems just as cheap as AMD that are actually much faster.
