  • Holiday Laptop Upgrades

Well as the holidays are right around the corner, and I am looking to spruce up my ~2 and a half year old laptop to hopefully keep it running happily along and able to continue to play new releases. The issue is that sadly, I have never done any sort of PC-modification outside of plugging in new graphics cards or new memory stick which hardly needed any effort at all, so frankly I have little to no idea on what to actually do when it comes to these upgrades. Specifically I am looking at 1. Installing a SSD (My Asus G51J has two 320GB HDD's, I would replace the one with the windows install), 2 Installing more RAM, and 3. Possibly installing a new CPU however I will most likely stick with the one I have currently. While there are a lot of computer-build threads floating around, none of them seemed to pertain to laptops so thats why I started this one.

    My main questions are
    • Which SSD would you all recommend for a laptop (Either 120GB or 240GB as I haven't decided which size to go with yet - Also I think the laptop only supports SATA II)
    • Which Ram upgrades would you recommend - The laptop currently has 4GB but I think it can hold up to 8GB, and I think it only can use DDR3 1333.
    • How would you go about installing both of the above. I assume the RAM would be fairly easy however with the SSD I would be completely lost. I would also prefer to back up my documents and start with a clean install of Win7 rather than simply transferring the current install to the SSD.
    • Also I have no idea how to do a clean install of windows, nonetheless on a brand new drive. My lack of any sort of reformatting/reinstallation/even flashing windows has probably led to my computer being quite slower recently then it should be.

I have no idea about what computer specs would be needed to help with this, but I copied some quick specs from the manufacturer's site and posted a dxdiag as well.

And finally thanks ahead of time, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Holiday Laptop Upgrades

The first 2 upgrades should be relatively simple. I would try locating either a document from asus detailing some of the assembly dis assembly process or a user who took pictures.

      Re: Holiday Laptop Upgrades

NOTE: Check your laptop's manual first and have a careful look. Each laptop tends to be different and installing hardware into yours may be different than what I have written below.

      SSD:

Usually the HDDs are usually housed in a removable (or sometimes a pop-up-style) HDD caddy/cage. The HDD is mounted (by screws) onto this cage and then installed (could pop in, could slide, method varies from manufacturer to manufacturer). There should be a access cover on the bottom that when removed reveals the HDDs. This cover might be just for the HDDs or for HDDs, CPU, and/or RAM as well. I don't recall the bottom of your particular model, so I'll leave that to your own intuition.

Just keep in mind, you might have to install the SSD using the bottom screw holes rather than the side screw holes because of it's smaller size. The stock cage should not need an adapter or any modification in order to mount the SSD.

In some laptops, there is no cage. The HDD, just drops into the spot and gets slided in and "locks" securely. No clue if you'd have trouble with the SSD in this case. I'd assume, it'd pose a problem with it not fitting snugly in place (or perhaps not at all). Rare, so I'd probably wouldn't worry about this being the case.

      RAM:

This is fairly straight forward. The SO-DIMMs sit at an angle and for the most part are usually installed at a angle and then "snapped" into place by pushing the modules towards the retainer clips. To remove the RAM, you'd push back these clips and carefully push up the RAM and remove from the slot. Just be careful here and not use too much force as you can break the slots and the plastic (usually) retaining clips.

The RAM might also swing up, again, depending on design.

Depending on the board and manufacturer design, each module might overlap another. Therefore, you'd have to remove the top one to get to the others. Conversely, you'll have to install into the lowest one first.

        Re: Holiday Laptop Upgrades

Thanks. The physical installation of the SSD and the Ram shouldn't be too bad as I have done a bit of that a few years back, and the ram should hopefully be easy because it is just a plug and play with (hopefully) no settings to change.

I am pretty sure I have an asus recovery/windows 7 disc somewhere so I assume to install Windows 7 on the new SSD all I do is install the SSD, put the disc in the optical, and start the computer. Also, with the reinstallation of the operating system, can I simply back up certain program file, program data, and user account folders that I want to transfer or do I have to deal with registry issues etc?

Here is what I am planning on getting so far (and possibly getting a smaller SSD, I haven't decided yet):

SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC256B/WW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
        Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model CT2KIT51264BC1339

Obviously the memory is well, memory so the brand is not nearly as big of a deal as the SSD, however does the 830 Series look like a good idea? It had plenty of good reviews and I am pretty sure I saw it on Tom's Hardware somewhere.

          Re: Holiday Laptop Upgrades

Honestly, I only buy a few brands of memory, mostly G.Skill, Corsair, and Kingston. After issues with several pairs of Crucial a few years back, I've stayed away from them.

As for SSD, Samsung and Intel are the ones to go for if you care about reliability. Otherwise, OCZ is top-notch when it comes to performance if you can stomach the myriad of firmware upgrades before all the bugs are worked out. Kingston's SSDs are also fine (I use a 3K 240 GB in my rig), as is AData, Mushkin, Corsair, Plextor, Crucial, and a few others. Crucial seems to have earned a nice track record for being good bangs for your money if you are on a tight budget and absolutely must have a SSD. Plextor is the new kid on the block, but have a awesome firmware development team that puts out very bug-free and solid patches. Something to consider.

            Re: Holiday Laptop Upgrades

Another quick question: I have still been looking around for SSD's and my top choice, the Samsung 830 with the notebook kit, has been sold out for a while not on Newegg. I have found two other potential choices and I am wondering what you all would recommend?

              Re: Holiday Laptop Upgrades

I just purchased the 840 and considered the Intel, either should suffice but I'm more concerned with the memory specs. (not knowing which laptop you have I assume you've checked mem speed and quantity and know your getting compatible ram.)

I replaced the cpu in my nephew's laptop a couple of years ago and somethings are just not meant to be. That's one heart transplant I would not attempt again.

                Re: Holiday Laptop Upgrades

Yea I have already decided against the CPU upgrade. With the memory I may stick with 1066 to be safe, but supposedly from this thread it can handle 1333.
