  • Computer for GMA

Well my Grandma's computer went and croaked, and i offered to build her a new computer.

    Here's the specs:

    HDD: 500 gig WD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136769
    GPU: GTX 650 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130841
    MOBO: Asus 98Z77-V http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131837
    PSU: Corsair 750w Modular http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139010
RAM: Corsair 8 gigs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233218 (Free)
    CPU: Core i3 2100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115078
    Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129187

I was pushed into ordering these things on short notice, and keeping things below $700. Any comments or concerns i should worry about?

750W is overkill. You'll get away with a 450w easy.

The PSU is recycled from a previous computer of mine. And I'm well aware of that.

the 650 might be overkill for her too, but she'll probably use it until it dies too

          Re: Computer for GMA

The whole computer is a little overkill for a grandmother who definitely won't use it to play BF3 or Crysis. Downgrade the GPU, CPU, and MOBO...

this is kind of like the idea of grand mothers who own and drive Benz or BMW...

                    Re: Computer for GMA

Her old computer was a $1500 (from 2006) desktop with an 8800 GTX, 8 gigs of ram, and Quad core processor. And XPS machine from dell. The case itself is a steel 35 pound full tower behemoth.

She does video and photo editing as a hobby. She HATES apple (so no ipad) and she likes that i build computers. I just wanted to check for compatibility issues. And i want this computer to last as long as the old one did.

                      Re: Computer for GMA

It looks fine to me if her uses are video and photo editing. I'm assuming Photoshop and Vegas Pro (or a similar software)? Does she deal with any RAW format files? If so, I'd probably invest in a larger hard drive or a portable one as an extra so she can backup any data (and not lose it to a virus or hardware failure).

It may have been a bit more wise to title the thread "something to do with video editing build" rather than just grandma. Not everyone has a cool grandma.
