  • Lazy man wants decent gaming rig, pre-built

I am an old (ancient) former TG'er. For the last decade or so I have been fairly nomadic and have made-do with a laptop and older games. I'm now stationary for a bit and looking to get a decent gaming (and work) rig. I'd like to keep the costs down (600-1000) but I no longer have the time or energy to research and build my own system.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a source in the UK (not US) for good, pre-built PCs (Windows 7, though will eventually dual-boot with some flavour of Linux). I do a bit of game development as well, so some CPU-intensive multi-tasking will be done. But the system doesn't need to be the envy of every gamer. I need something affordable but worth the investment, and something that I can extend piece by piece later on as funds allow.

Something like Dell's Alienware X51 is nice to me because I have used Dell in the past and found them to be affordable and run without hiccups (except all the bloatware). But I'd worry that the case doesn't look like it will be easy to bolt on additions when I need to upgrade the performance. Are there other (UK) providers who offer good, expertly-designed systems at a reasonable cost? Can anyone tell me if the Alienware is a bad way to go?

    Thanks.

edit - wow, I'm so ancient my profile still includes links to my ICQ and AIM accounts!

H, you want AMD or Intel? AMD has the price side while Intel still blows AMD out of the water when it comes to performance.

Hi H-Hour, I am UK as well, and there are a few places that do pre-builds. Like www.overclockers.co.uk and http://www.aria.co.uk/ as well. Have a look and post up your thoughts, and the people can chime in with info and opinions if you need it mate.

      And welcome back.

        Hi H-Hour,

I live in Manchester and there is a place down the road from me located in Bolton called Scan. I bought all the stuff for my rig from there, they have a wide range of gear and sell various component bundles which they will OC and give a rigorous stress test to to ensure stability before they send it out.
They also sell a wide range of fully pre built systems or they can be built to your specifications and OC'd for you aswell. They use DPD to deliver their goods so delivery if fantastic. I've never had a bad word to say about them tbh.

        CHeck 'em out.

Thanks for all the UK recommendations, guys. I'll check them out. BeSiege82, I'd like to go with Intel because I've had overheating and incompatibility problems with amd.

I got my machine from overclockers about a year ago and recently upgraded the GPU without any issues whatsoever. The machine has run flawlessly.

Apo! It is strangely and deeply satisfying to see TG still going strong. If you fancy a catch-up, please stop by the #ufoai channel on freenode sometime. If you're not active on irc I can find you elsewhere.

To others, the endorsements are appreciated. I will look closely at the sites and come back for some more advice.
