  • LTNS guys. Finally built my new rig

So I finally punched that puppy and spent a bunch of money on a completely new everything. My old Core2Duo, while still performing well in a lot of the games I used to play, was showing a lot of age and my OCZ PSU blew up on me in late October/November, which appeared to hae taken out some of my APCI on my old board, so my computer wouldn't shut off completely. It would shut off, but then remain in an ultra-low power mode with the case fans spinning slowly and HDD blinking. Have been saving up for a new rig since BF3, but times being as they were, I had to lose a bunch of money bailing out my parents from some situations, so I couldn't afford it then. Decided to treat myself right as a pre-christmas present. Besides that, my good 1600x1200 5:4 CRT burned out a couple of years ago and I've been stuck on a 17" with max 1024x768 res.

Anyone care to rate my new rig? All told it was aboooout 1600-1700 from what I can track down.

    Case: Rosewill Blackhawk ATX mid-tower

PSU: Thermaltake Smart M Series SP-850 850w modular (my brother calls it semi-modular)

Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme6 ATX motherboard

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5ghz

    Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212+

Memory: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical DDR3 1866 in dual channel

    VGA: MSI N770 4GD/5 OC 4gb geforce 770 gtx

Harddrives: new 3TB Seagate Barracuda SATA 3 spinner, my old 1.5/1 TB backup and storage drives (still show very good life on SMART)

    SSD/OS drive: Samsung 840 Pro SATA 3 MLC 128GB

    New OS: Windows 8.1 Pro

New Monitor: ASUS VG248QE gaming 24" 1ms GTG, 144hz TN panel LCD

For ****s and giggles: NVidia 3D Vision 2 active shutter 3D glasses

    Edit: Oh, forgot the nerdporn.

From This: (the flash on this phone makes all the dust look a lot worse than it should, yes, my desk corner is trashy)

DICE needs to make a comical boxing glove attached to a spring punch the player in the face 40% of the time they get into a helicopter or jet.

Ok. Gotta admit.......little jealous. Looks real nice and based on those specs you will not have an issue with any game currently running.

Have you used the 3d vision much? How does that look?

I think that looks amazing. What headset is that on your desk?

Yeah, I'm tired of playing on medium settings in ARMA2 and low in bf3/4 ;) my e84000 3ghz core 2 duo and BFG (remember them?) gtx260 superclocked were hitting lots of walls the past 2 years.

3d, in games that support it good, looks damn fantastic. While the monitor has to go down to 120hz to go into 3d mode (60fps each eye) i haven't REALLY noticed any problems with it except when a game is super-heavy and drops frames during heavy action, like Hawken running at max settings. Thats where you start to get a strobing, semi-transparent edge to close up moving objects kind of like what you sometimes see in digital 3d theaters. That might also be some small incompatibilities as well, not every game is '3d vision ready' which means it works as flawlessly as they're able to make it, but many are 'good' or 'excellent' with tweaks like turning off HDR bloom or shadows. There is also a modding community that uses direct3d injectors and in some cases modifies all the game's shaders by hand to try to get things looking right.

The closest analogy I can give you is that it's like someone's knocked the backside of your monitor back a few hundred feet. Lots of things have depth, and you're able to tell actual distances between things and judge them semi-accurately. Metro 2033 gives me a 3d rifle that looks to extend out from my view 3 feet (really cool in ironsights), while corridors are bumped out and extended to a realistic distance, smoke and lighting becomes volumetric in it's appearance.. it's a pretty experience. Similarly with Just Cause 2. Flying in Just Cause 2 makes it look like your plane is suspended in the middle of a large 'box', if you will, framed by 3d buildings, ground, and sky, with enemy fire on all sides zooming around in depth, fog and smoke in layering and realistic trailing by your plane.. it's pretty awesome.

War Thunder has some issues (the tracers are somewhat hard to judge, for example, and the bomb sight view is at the wrong default convergeance so you get doubling or have to refocus your eyes.. Interesting in that for me to use the reflex sights in the ww2 aircraft I have to actually narrow my vision and focus on the scope if you will as if it was a real gun. Skyrim while looking okay by default, looks jaw dropping with fanmade Helixmod installed, as does fallout new vegas.

Technically, and as I've been told by other people, it's an expensive gimmick. The list of games that work really, really good with it is somewhat small, while others are more or less just 'acceptable'. But it's an effective and enjoyable gimmick ;) if expensive.

Tritton AX PC51 Pro 5.1 surround-sound headset. My mainstay over the past 8 years has been Tritton headsets after Plantronics started going with very cheap builds in their stereo headsets. Admittedly, the Tritton of today isn't nearly as good as when I first used them, as they got bought by Mad Catz, but they try. This model, they went back to their previously very acceptable gooseneck-joint boom mic instead of the hard rubber straight-out one and the build quality is better now. Still not as good as my metal-can AX360s they came out with in 2006, but what are you going to do. It has analog input as well as a digital converter box i use right now (used to use analog 5.1 exclusively, but it's a bit harder to do now) with dolby digital and pro logic decoding. All told I've not had much issue with them, but I wish I could step back to 2005-2006 and get another AX360 or Medusa headset.

Probably not the sound quality all you Sennheiser users drool after, but the surround works reasonably well to my ears and I can't afford the spacial real estate for a true 5/7.1 system (lol, I'm using a corner desk, what do you think). Mic is fantastic, but they went to a USB mic for this generation (also powers the amplifier for the speakers and the digital volume/zone control and LEDs lighting up their logo) instead of a 3.5 jack. Not really complaining though, because the previous model used 2 transformers, one to power the headset amps and in-line with the sound cables, and one to power the converter box.

Re: LTNS guys. Finally built my new rig

The one thing that I would like, coming off of 20+ years of using a CRT monitor to LCD, is some advice in ICC profiles or the like. My monitor is very bright, have followed some decent online guides as to calibration, bit it still sometimes washes some of the colors out. That may also be because of the matte anti-glare coating on it, probably. It's comfortable to use in the daytime, i rarely get any kind of reflection or bad hazing even though my window kind-of faces the computer screen at an angle. Anyone want to help a brother out? Also cleaning tips. I assume taking a paper towel to it and using windex like my NEC Multisync glass screen is a no-no :D

P.S. For my brother has been asking for a new monitor for a few weeks now. He has an old 24" Viewsonic p95f 2560x1600 res CRT and his anti-reflective coating has been flaking off for some time and it recently started going crazy in lower-resolution modes, like http://imageshack.us/a/img812/8067/cnxz.jpg

I bought him a new BenQ XL24020te monitor for christmas, should arrive today. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824014350 Good choice?

That is a GREAT choice for him. The headphone jack which plugs straight into the monitor is a major plus.

Great Rig, just get some fan filters. No offence but it looks like you live in a pigpen.

The mesh front of his case probably already acts like a fan filter for those two LED intake fans. Who knows, perhaps there is already fan filters installed behind the mesh.
