Shopping for an upgrade from my HD6950. I need something that will run BF4 on high/ultra and support a 27" monitor plus a secondary 19".

    R9 280 $195
    GTX 660 $230
    R9 280X $250
    GTX 770 $270

    Thoughts?

If your willing to spend 270 - go a bit higher for the new 970. Not super easy to find atm though since they just launched.

I just gotta Gigabyte 970, and the thing rocks! (except for Star Citizen right now.) But like FBmantis said, they are getting pretty hard to find.

        Re: Video Cards

The resolution of the monitor is the primary concern when trying to match it to a video card rather than the physical size. Regardless the suggestion given to you is on target if you are looking to spend that amount of money.

Less is better if it will get the job done. I'll look for the 970 and see how much $ we're talking.

Our, I'll click on Scratch's link and see it is $370. That's quite a bit more than I was looking to pay. I'm trying to stay closer to $200.

                I'm thinking 2560 x 1440.

And as I've done some research I've learned about G-Sync. Hide my credit card...

Personally, I've been considering another HD 7950. Thanks to getting things working and Dirtboy, I plan to pass on the 650 he hooked me up with.

The 280X would be my first choice in that list, followed by the 280. I've already discounted nVidia when it comes to price-to-performance for their current cards. (Have not read anything on the 970 yet, but I'm sure AMD has something better in the works as they usually do.)

                      Re: Video Cards

I can get a GTX 970 for $350 and it appears to be a significant step up from the R9 $280X for $100 more. From what I've read the price/performance ratio is quite good. G-sync is probably a non-issue for now since the monitors are at a significant premium, so how well will a 280X do with 2560 x 1440?

Some 970s go for $329.99 but again tough to find atm. If you decide you want one you can follow a thread like this to get one.

R9 290/280X or GTX 770 are certainly solid options at a lower price point.

                            Thanks for the feedback.

I stumbled across this site (nowinstock.net) where you can be notified when an item is in stock. I've already received notifications at all hours when the GTX 970 has come into stock at Amazon and Newegg. Pretty helpful when you're after a hard to find item.

So for $100 more, you can get ~12 fps more with a GTX 970 vs. a R9 280X. Roughly 25% increase in framerate for a 40% increase in price.
