  • What to upgrade?

I am wondering what would be the best component to upgrade:

    AMD Athlon 64 2800 (1.8 GHz)
ATI Sapphire Radeon X300SE (256 MB i think, 128-bit interface)
    1 GB RAM

I would also like to keep the price reasonable...
Let me know if u need any more info, and thanks in advance

Video card all the way. As for what card...define 'reasonable'.

xfx geforce 6800gs, it's $200 at newegg. That's assuming you have a PCIex16 slot. If you're still running AGP, maybe one of the 6600 flavors.

              a couple more questions:

if two cards have the same specs, will the have the same or about the same performance? if not, then how can you tell how good a card is?

how much of an improvement would this be over my current card?

Would i be able to use both cards at the same time?

usally its about the same if the specs are pretty much the same... but keep in mind my friend that the amout of ram dont matter much anymore. there are 128 meg card that can own 256 meg cards. i would recomment bentch markin or just lookin at some reviews. u cant go wrong with the 6800 GS or get sappire x800GTO2 that can be unlocked at 16 pipes and can go to almost the same clock speed as the x850xt pe that is assuming u have PCI-E since the only GTOs that unlock are PCI-E only.

if u get any of the cards suggested then u will see a huge increase not only in FPS but u can up the quilty and make your games look great. i cant imagine not havin AA and AF in my games.

                  Re: What to upgrade?

yes i do have pci express

im sorry, but what is AA and AF

another q (thx for the help guys):

is it just me or does bf2 take much more resources than anything else? I run Call of Duty 2 at all max settings fine, but i have to keep bf2 at medium-low settings...

Also, i think im gonna have to bring that price range down to around 125, since this is not really a desperate need

                    Re: What to upgrade?

                    Hey Vegeet,

AA is a method to take out the "Jaggies" that are present in the image on the screen....BF2 has them bad because of all the power lines and buildings on the maps..AF is a bit more complicated. It's a higher level filtering method I think..

For $125 you could probably get a Geforce 6600GT and it would be a big improvement over your current card.

                    Good luck!!

                      Re: What to upgrade?

oh i get it, AA is anti aliasing

                      and AT is anisotropic?

                        yep.

and a 6600GT would still be a HUGE improvement over your x300. you've got a decent processor and enough memory, but your video card is holding everything back.

sounds like the 6600GT would be the best choice for me

is there an equivalent card from ATI?

also: what is the difference in bf2 between AA and texture filtering?

Actually, i can only run CoD2 at max settings when its set to use DirectX 7, instead of 9. When I set it to use 9, even with all other settings at minimum, there is massive lag. I guess i need and will need this card more than i thought

                              Re: What to upgrade?

AA is antialiasing, which smooths out lines that would otherwise be rendder as jagged.

AF, anistropic filtering, concerns textures. i can't give you a ton of info, as i've never seen much difference with it, but it basically improves the clarity of textures at a distance.

the best ATI alternative to a 6600GT would be an x800GTO. in fact, it may be a better alternative, as prices on them have fallen quite a bit, assuming you have PCIe.
