  • WINE Benchmarks

Interesting post over on WineHQ that I thought I'd share with all of you linux afficianados. The WINE team benchmarked a Gentoo system and and XP system with all sorts of actions, and displayed the results.

    http://wiki.winehq.org/BenchMark-0.9.5

The upshot: for basic computing, WINE tends to execute the actions from Windows programs slightly faster than XP, but WINE has a real issue with graphics.

Using WINE, FPS drop significantly when running a game on WINE vs. XP, from a low of -8%, to as much as -33%. Presumably Cedega, or the DirectX patch would make that score better, but probably not by much.

Yeah I've been keeping my eyes tied very closely to WINE and Cedega...especially when it comes to BF2 performance. They are touting Cedega 5 as being "compatible" with BF2 now. Some people have had good results, which is promising.

Gaming is the only thing keeping me from going all linux. So instead I have to have several computers. I poop on dual booting.

I run winxp in vmware on linux and it runs pretty dang good. no gaming at all, of course, but otherwise runs great. It sure will be nice when we can get to the point of running any OS virtually with little to no performance degradation. Here's to wishing!

      Re: WINE Benchmarks

EFI BIOS might be good for Linux. It appears that Intel Macs will be the first popular general computer hardware to use it, and Vista will be the first MS OS to use it. The idea is to put OS-independent drivers in the BIOS, which means that Linux would be able to use hardware-accelerated video on any EFI system without special drivers.

      Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Yeah that would be great. ubuntu already runs pretty well on macs, but faster video would really be awesome..
