I just reformatted, now when i use my mic in Natural Selection the voice chat fades in and out as if i am tapping my voice key.(i am NOT tapping it). i had this problem before but i cant remember how i fixed it. i think it is happening because somthing else is trying to use the mic at the same time. but i dont know what it could be. I don't have teamspeak so thats out of the way already. any ideas?

      Re: Microphone Woes

      1) Is this default install of NS? No custom scripting yet?

      2) What soundcard do you have, have you downloaded the latest drivers for it. What are you full computer specs? (mobo, video, sound, RAM, Windows version, etc...)

      3) I think I mentioned this in the game but control panel> sounds> audio> make your your default sound recording advice is set to your soundcard.

      4) Have you tried a different microphone, or do you only have one?

I just recently formated my HD too, its a great way to increase your system performance dramatically. I seem to have no problems using my microphone during my reinstall of NS in my reformated hard drive since I had a backup of my config files, I'll post my config files here and see if they help you or not. (Yes, I have had these problems before.)

        Config.cfg:

i am unsure of my full specs, but i know the sound card is a Sound Blaster Audigy something or other. i too am using my old config files. my microphone works outside of game just fine. clear as day, it just seems like some external program is shutting it off whenever i try to transmit. also i should note that i am using winxp pro, and i am able to hear the sounds produced by HLSS properly. i did check to see if my mic was on the default recorder and it is. i'm stumped. it was to be a setting outside of NS because i am using my hold cfg's.

            Re: Microphone Woes

Natural Selection doesn't have an auto-on mic feature when it detects a certain threshold reached, does it? Check the mic options in NS and make sure it is set to only turn on when you press the button, and not automatically when it detects noise on the mic line. If you start transmitting, that can cut off someone else who is currently speaking.

NS requires that a button be pushed, and doing so does not prevent others from speaking.

I did a google and here is another option you can try, it should work the same in NS. Just type +voice_dsound 1 in the console when you start half-life to see if this fixes it. I am not sure if the game needs to be restarted after using it, but you can put it in your NS launch options or userconfig.cfg to try it if it does.

I had *exactly* the same problem mate, I think it's SB Live! related.
It drove me nuts trying to fix it.

The setting which solved my problem is voice_dsound 1.
The default setting is voice_dsound 0 and for whatever reason this
seems to bugger up my in game voice comms after a moment or two in a
server. What I found though is that it is no good changing the setting
in the console when you are in the game, this won't fix it.

I added +voice_dsound 1 to my CS shortcut command line so that CS
starts with this setting in place, it now initializes itself properly
and my voice is fine in game.

You could perhaps alternatively put the command into your autoexec.bat
                file or config file??

Check it in game, when you join a server go straight to console, type
voice_dsound then hit enter and cs will return showing you the current
setting. It must be voice_dsound 1 from the start, I think that should
solve your trouble, it did for me.

                Good luck m8 :)

BTW, i understand that what this does is simply force the game to use
the direct sound input from your mic instead of using the default
                conversion to .wav sound method.
If this doesn't work, you have to start using the process of elimation to figure it out:

                1) Install the latest drivers for your audigy from www.soundblaster.com, seems audigys are always having problems with old games. Go to control panel>system>hardware>device manager> sound, video, and game controllers> It should list your full audigy name here... ie... Audigy Platinum etc... you will need to know the full kind to choose the right driver here:

                http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/

                2) Either disable or uninstall HLSS temporarily till you can get your mic working properly on its own inside NS. I'm thinking this is the main culprit causing issues, and possibly some of your old binds with it are conflicting. Best way to test this option is to uninstall HLSS completely then uninstall your current NS (backup the files you need somewhere else, then actually delete the NS folder from \half-life\. Then follow #3.

                3) Re-install NS with a ENTIRELY fresh install of NS, no scripts, don't even bother configuring any keys. After installing it cleanly, open it up and open the console and type voice_loopback 1. Then type map co_faceoff and start talking into your mic (hitting ALT) and see if its still doing it. Check all the microphone settings in the game on the voice tab and make sure the volume and everything is high enough (try the +gain option as well).

                    Re: Microphone Woes

For future reference, I've read that voice_dsound has to be specified on the hl.exe command line, not from the console. I don't know if that's true.
