  • Windows Media Player 9

I remember reading things about this version that made me not want to install it. Supposedly it was going to really wreak havok on media with regards to copyright permissions.

Anyone having any trouble with MediaPlayer9 not playing certain things? Is there any reason for me not to upgrade to the latest version?

Yes, stay away from 9, If you copy music directly off bought CDs and put them on your HD you cannot play them with either. A) CD being in your computer. B) Getting a License agreement from the web. (its free but it makes me so nervous when i agree to them)

I have WMP 9 installed but I never use for listening to music. It's quick to open so I use it for previewing sound clips or vids of the net. I used it for the Superbowl commercials.

Do you have lots of "amatuer" audio and video clips?

A friend of mine has ripped a zillion cd's onto his HD and has never had a problem with Media Player. He didn't use media player to rip the cd's, which may have something to do with it.

Version 9? I'm using 8.something and it doesn't have any of that silly copyright crap on it... It'll play anything and everything... Version 9 is where Windows Media Player started getting silly...

The reason I'm asking is because I'm running into 3rd party software that has features that only work with WMP9. Everything except these features works perfectly for me. If I'm going to be unable to play things on WMP9, then I'm not interested in these features.

My friend is pretty sure that he's running the latest but he'll have to wait 'till he gets home to check.

I haven't had any issues with it and my "amatuer" video collection. Needless to say it does have some options you will probably want to turn off but they are obvious. Why not just have 2 programs? Open the files you want the WMP9 functionality extensions with WMP9 (probably going to be WMV files anyway) and everything else with some 3rd party thing like Winamp or RealOne (AVI, MPG, etc etc etc).

'Cause I've been assimilated and enjoy the convenience of having 1 program that is quick (tightly integrated with my OS) and does everything I need, the way I want it to...

I think this is the way that I'm going to go, though. I'm going to upgrade, and then if I have any issues, I'll just use Real or Apple to play stuff...
