  • Computer Spontaneously Reboots

    Hello all ...

I am having a problem with my computer REBOOTING every once in a while.
I know there can be several things that would cause this ...

    CPU overheat
    Bad Ram
    Virus - Scan Detects nothing

Question is .... is there a program that will allow me to monitor my CPU temp or runa diagnostic check of my system ?

    Thanks Guys!!!

Does it display an error message saying it will reboot in 2 miniutes or something, or does it just instantly shut off then start up again?

Bad power is more likely than any of these to cause random reboots...

What kind of power supply do you have?

        Re: Computer Spontaneously Reboots

I just ran HARDWARE MONITOR ( hmonitor.com ) and everything looks good Temp and voltage wise.

        Temps:

        Mainboard - 25 c
        CPU - 35 c
        HDD 1 - 53 c
        HDD2 - 31 c

        Voltages:
        +12v = +12.04V / +11.98V
        +5V = +5.19V
        Core: +1.42V
        I/O : +3.34V

        Graphics :

        GPU: 45 c
        Ambient: 32 c

I have 6 fans running in my Case .... 4 Intake and 2 Exhaust so it should be pretty cool in there ....

This just started happening about a week ago.

I built this system about 3 months ago.

You seem to have automatic restart enabled.

Right click My computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, settings and uncheck automatically restart. Instead of rebooting, you will get a BSOD with some info on what caused the restart. You can also have a look in the events log.

You could also run some memory diagnostics, just in case.

            memtest.

            Another one from Microsoft

              Re: Computer Spontaneously Reboots

Bad memory or not-quite-compatible memory sticks is a very likely cause. If it is happening regularly, borrow some RAM and try it out for a bit.

I had some new memory which completely prevented my system from booting. I brought it back to the store, and the drones there stuck it in one of their demo machines to confirm it was bad. It booted no problem in their machine, but 60 seconds later it spontaneously rebooted.

I had a similar problem a while back caused by the voltage on my power supply. I don't remember what it was set to but it was the wrong setting (there's a little red switch on the back of mine). Apparently I had switched it over by accident sometime and it eventually caused my videocard to fry :(

Just one more thing to check.

When I switched the voltage on my PSU ages ago the damn thing exploded, it was pretty cool, it was blue :p

Hmmm .. I bought Corsair Memory ... I would like to think that since i paid extra for the "GOOD" stuff that it wouldn't be BAD

Unfortunately, the error will say something like "unexpected error 0x0015", and searching for information on this will lead to a web page which says:
"This error is caused by a hardware driver or motherboard or memory problem."

                        Of course :).

This is why I added links to diagnostics :)

Laugh, yeah, the little toggle switch for wether or not you're on Euro or US power systems. Not the best thing in the world to toggle accidently :D

OK, I just got ti again .. but this time I did what Dick Blonov said about the AUTO RESART thing and I got a BSOD that said the failure was due to NPFS.SYS .

Anyone have any Idea on this ??

Not much helpful returned in a Google search but this thread happens to have a few suggestions on isolating the problem...
