  • Memory Config Question

    Hey All,

As you may know, I was having a problem with my computer REBOOTING and have come to the conclusion that it was my MEMORY ... BOTH 1 GB modules are bad.

anyway, called Corsair Tech Support and they are sending 2 new Sticks to me.

    My question is:

While I wait to receive the new memory, I have a Stick of 512MB PC 2700/DDR 333 and 1 stick of 512MB PC 2100/DDR266 both Corsair memory.

Could I go into the bios and CLOCK DOWN the memory setting to 266mhz and run both chips in there ?

    Just a thought ...

Thanks to the MEMORY experts that reply !!

    :D

    Re: Memory Config Question

You might not even have to down-clock it. Unless I'm mistaken most motherboards will just force all RAM to run at the lowest speed detected.

How did you determine that the modules were bad?

              Re: Memory Config Question

yup .. Ran MEMTEST - 86 on each module seperately and both came up with errors.

Luckily i had an older PC2700 512MB chip that I popped in and ran MEMTEST on that one and it came up with NO errors.

I now have 2 512mb sticks in my amchine until I receive my replacements and I am not getting any crashes or faults like I was getting witht he bad ram ....

Ah, ok. My game machine has memtest86 in the BIOS as a boot choice. (DFI mobo.)

                  Re: Memory Config Question

Ram sticks will always run at the speed of the slowest ram stick in your system unless you tell it otherwise. You only have to adjust your bios if you have an older board that doesn't have it's own ram multiplier. (I had an old 266 board that ran the ram at the CPU fsb only, but new boards all have seperate multipliers that run the ram independantly.)
